Lesson Plan:

(5 minutes) Warm-up: Revision of Place Value

  • Start with a quick recap of place value (ones, tens, hundreds). Ask students to identify the place value of digits in different numbers. For example: "What is the place value of 3 in 345?"
  • Use an abacus or write numbers on the board and ask them to identify the place values.

(15 minutes) Activity 1: Beads and Strings – Understanding Carrying Over

  • Explain that they will use beads and strings to understand carrying over.
  • Example: Addition of 17 and 15
    • Represent 17 using 1 string of 10 beads and 7 single beads.
    • Represent 15 using 1 string of 10 beads and 5 single beads. Image
    • Ask students to combine the single beads. They should have 7 + 5 = 12 beads.
    • Explain that since they have more than 10 single beads, they can make another string of 10.
    • Guide them to take 10 beads from the 12 single beads and make a new string of 10. They will be left with 2 single beads.
    • Now, they have 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 strings of 10 beads and 2 single beads.
    • Therefore, 17 + 15 = 32.
  • Repeat with a couple of more examples, encouraging students to actively participate.

(15 minutes) Activity 2: Base-10 Blocks – Visualizing Addition

  • If available, use base-10 blocks to demonstrate addition with carrying over. If not, you can draw representations on the board.
  • Example: Addition of 26 and 18
    • Represent 26 using 2 tens blocks and 6 ones blocks.
    • Represent 18 using 1 ten block and 8 ones blocks. Image
    • Combine the ones blocks. They will have 6 + 8 = 14 ones blocks.
    • Explain that 10 ones blocks can be exchanged for 1 ten block.
    • Exchange 10 ones blocks for 1 ten block.
    • Now, they have 2 + 1 + 1 = 4 tens blocks and 4 ones blocks.
    • Therefore, 26 + 18 = 44.
  • Let students practice with different numbers.

(10 minutes) Worksheet Practice

  • Distribute worksheets with addition problems involving carrying over.
  • Ask students to solve the problems individually.
  • Walk around to assist students who are struggling.
  • Examples of problems:
    • 37+25=?37 + 25 = ?
    • 48+16=?48 + 16 = ?
    • 59+33=?59 + 33 = ?
    • 64+28=?64 + 28 = ?

(5 minutes) Wrap-up: Review and Homework

  • Review the concept of carrying over and its importance in addition.
  • Ask students to explain the steps involved in addition with carrying over.
  • Assign homework: Give a few more addition problems to solve at home.
