  • Level 1 (Low Achievers): Focus on identifying and describing the basic functions of major animal body systems.
  • Level 2 (Middle Achievers): Explain how two or more body systems interact to perform a specific function.
  • Level 3 (High Achievers): Evaluate how different body systems work together to meet the survival needs of an animal in a specific environment.

Period 1: Introduction to Animal Body Systems (45 minutes)

Objective:

  • Introduce the concept of animal bodies as systems and evaluate how survival needs of animals are met by systems working together.

Activities:

  1. Engage (10 minutes):
    • Show a picture of a pangolin and ask students what they know about it. Image
    • Discuss how its scales protect it from predators, linking structure to function.
    • Introduce the lesson's guiding question: "How are the survival needs of animals met by systems working together?"
  2. Exploration 1 (25 minutes):
    • Distribute Handout 1: "Can You Explain It?" featuring the nautilus.
    • Have students read the description of the nautilus and answer the question: "How does this nautilus move and catch food?" in their Evidence Notebooks.
    • Think-Pair-Share: Students discuss their initial ideas with a partner and then share with the class.
  3. Wrap-up (10 minutes):
    • Briefly discuss the concept of animal bodies as systems and their importance for survival.

Formative Assessment:

  • Low Achievers: Can identify at least one survival need of the nautilus (e.g., finding food).
  • Middle Achievers: Can describe how one structure of the nautilus (e.g., tentacles) helps it meet a survival need.

  • Compare and contrast the body structures of different types of animals.

Activities:

  1. Review (5 minutes):
    • Briefly review the previous lesson and the concept of animal bodies as systems.
  2. Exploration 1 (30 minutes):
    • Divide students into pairs and assign each pair two animals from the "Animal Diversity" table (page 83).
    • Have them create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the body structures of their assigned animals.
    • Students should discuss and record their observations in their Evidence Notebooks.
  3. Class Discussion (10 minutes):
    • Have each pair share their Venn diagram with the class, highlighting the similarities and differences between their animals.

Formative Assessment:

  • Low Achievers: Can identify one similarity or difference between two animals.
  • Middle Achievers: Can identify multiple similarities and differences between two animals and classify them correctly in a Venn diagram.
  • High Achievers: Can explain how the similarities and differences in body structures relate to the animals' environments and lifestyles.

  • Provide pre-filled Venn diagrams with some categories for low achievers.
  • Encourage high achievers to research additional animals and create their own comparison charts.

Period 3: Functions of Animal Bodies (45 minutes)

Objective:

  • Identify and describe the basic functions of animal body systems (digestive, excretory, respiratory, circulatory, muscular, nervous).

Activities:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes):
    • Introduce the main functions of animal bodies: digesting food, eliminating wastes, delivering oxygen and nutrients, movement, and information processing.
  2. Reading and Discussion (25 minutes):
    • Have students read the sections on "Digest Food and Eliminate Wastes," "Deliver Oxygen and Nutrients," "Movement and Support," and "Information Processing" (pages 84-86).
    • Discuss each system as a class, focusing on its main function and key structures.
  3. Concept Mapping (10 minutes):
    • Have students create a concept map in their Evidence Notebooks, linking each body system to its main function and key structures.

  • Low Achievers: Can match each body system to its main function (e.g., digestive system = breaking down food).

    • Explain the purpose of the lab: to measure how the respiratory and cardiovascular systems respond to exercise.
  2. Procedure (25 minutes):
    • Have students follow the procedure outlined on page 91 to measure their breathing rate and pulse before and after exercise.
    • Students should record their data in the table provided.
  3. Analysis and Conclusions (10 minutes):
    • Have students calculate the average breathing rate and pulse for each trial and answer the analysis questions on page 91.

Formative Assessment:

  • Low Achievers: Can accurately measure and record their breathing rate and pulse.
  • Middle Achievers: Can calculate the average breathing rate and pulse for each trial and describe how they changed after exercise.
  • High Achievers: Can explain how the changes in breathing rate and pulse relate to the interactions between the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

Differentiation:

  • Provide assistance with measuring and recording data for low achievers.
  • Encourage high achievers to design their own experiment to investigate the effects of different types of exercise on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

Period 6: Review and Assessment (45 minutes)

Objective:

  • Review the key concepts of the lesson and assess students' understanding of animal bodies as systems.

Activities:

  1. Review (20 minutes):
    • Review the key concepts of the lesson, including the functions of animal bodies, the key body systems, and their interactions.
    • Use the "Interactive Review" section on page 97 as a guide.
  2. Summative Assessment (25 minutes):
    • Have students complete the "Checkpoints" section on page 96 to assess their understanding of the lesson.
    • Collect Evidence Notebooks to review students' work throughout the lesson.

Summative Assessment:
