Lesson Activities

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

   • Brief review of gender concepts and equality.
   • Presentation of the topic with a thought-provoking question: "Why do most sports have male and female categories? Shouldn't everyone be able to compete in the same category?"

2. Theory (15 minutes)

   • Presentation of a brief history of gender equity in sport.
   • Discussion of current gender equity issues in sport, both globally and in South Africa.
   • Introduction of concepts such as Title IX (USA), the Women's Sports Foundation, and the South African Women's Sports Foundation.

3. Practical Activity (15 minutes)

   • Students will be divided into groups. Each group will receive a case study related to gender equity issues in sport.
   • Groups will discuss their case study and prepare a presentation on the issue, the impact, and possible solutions.
   • Each group will then present their findings to the class.

4. Group Discussion (10 minutes)

   • After all presentations, facilitate a group discussion on the findings and solutions proposed by each group.
   • Encourage students to think critically and consider different perspectives.

5. Conclusion (5 minutes)

   • Summarise the key points discussed during the lesson.
   • Reinforce the importance of gender equity in sport and the role each student plays in promoting equality.

Assessment

• Group presentations will be assessed on the understanding of the issue, the quality of the proposed solutions, and the ability to communicate effectively.
• Student participation in the group discussion will also be considered as part of their assessment.
