- Explain that West Asia, also known as the Middle East, includes countries like Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and others.

- Mention that the countries in West Asia have historical, cultural, physical, economic, and geographical characteristics that link them.

Geographical Characteristics (15 minutes)

Location and Boundaries:
- Use a world map to show the location of West Asia, emphasizing its position at the crossroads of Europe, Africa, and Asia.
- Identify the major bodies of water surrounding the region: the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Arabian Gulf, and the Arabian Sea.

Physical Features:
- Discuss the major physical features, including the Arabian Peninsula, the Fertile Crescent, and the Anatolian Plateau (Turkey).
- Arabian Peninsula: Explain that it is a large land area surrounded on three sides by bodies of water. Islam spread to other parts of the world from the Arabian Peninsula, which contains two of the holy cities in Islam: Mecca and Medina.
- Fertile Crescent: Explain that it is a crescent-shaped land that runs around the Syrian desert.
- Turkey and Anatolia: Explain that Anatolia, the large plateau of land in the north, now known as modern Turkey.
- Show images of mountain ranges like the Zagros Mountains, the Taurus Mountains and the Hejaz Mountains.
- Describe the arid and desert environments prevalent in much of the region, as well as coastal areas used for fishing and trade.
- Discuss the major physical features, including the Arabian Peninsula, the Fertile Crescent, and the Anatolian Plateau (Turkey).

- Focus on the significance of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Iraq, noting their role in the Fertile Crescent.
