I. Introduction (5 minutes)

II. The Chemistry of Fire (10 minutes)

    • Detail that a fuel combines with an oxidant, usually oxygen, to release energy in the form of heat and light.
    • Discuss the role of activation energy in starting a fire.
  • Elaborate on the Fire Triangle/Tetrahedron:
    • Fuel: Any substance that can burn (e.g., wood, paper, gasoline).
    • Oxygen: Typically from the air, supports the combustion.
    • Heat: Provides the energy needed to start and sustain the combustion.
    • Chemical Chain Reaction: The fourth element, present in the tetrahedron model, describes how fire sustains itself.
  • Discuss examples of different fuels and their chemical compositions.

III. Fire Extinguishers and Firefighting (15 minutes)

  • Introduce the different classes of fires (A, B, C, D, K) and the types of extinguishers used for each.

IV. Fire Safety (5 minutes)

  • Discuss basic fire safety measures:
    • Smoke detectors: Importance of having them and checking batteries regularly.
    • Escape plans: Develop and practice a home fire escape plan.
    • Stop, Drop, and Roll: What to do if clothing catches fire.
