Lesson Plan: Fire, Firefighting, and Flames

Lesson Objectives: Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Explain the chemical process of combustion.
- Identify the three components of the fire triangle and tetrahedron.
- Describe different types of fire extinguishers and their appropriate uses.
- Understand basic fire safety measures.
I. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin by asking students what they know about fire. What is it? What does it need to burn?
- Engage students by sharing a brief, captivating story about a historical fire event or a modern-day firefighting challenge.
- Briefly introduce the concept of the fire triangle and how it relates to understanding fire.

II. The Chemistry of Fire (10 minutes)
- Explain the chemical reaction of combustion.
- Combustion is a rapid chemical process involving the oxidation of a fuel, producing heat and light.
- Detail that a fuel combines with an oxidant, usually oxygen, to release energy in the form of heat and light.
- Discuss the role of activation energy in starting a fire.
- Elaborate on the Fire Triangle/Tetrahedron:
- Fuel: Any substance that can burn (e.g., wood, paper, gasoline).
- Oxygen: Typically from the air, supports the combustion.
- Heat: Provides the energy needed to start and sustain the combustion.
- Chemical Chain Reaction: The fourth element, present in the tetrahedron model, describes how fire sustains itself.
- Discuss examples of different fuels and their chemical compositions.
III. Fire Extinguishers and Firefighting (15 minutes)
- Introduce the different classes of fires (A, B, C, D, K) and the types of extinguishers used for each.
- Class A: Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, cloth).
- Class B: Flammable liquids (gasoline, oil, grease).
- Class C: Electrical fires (energized electrical equipment).
- Class D: Combustible metals (magnesium, titanium, sodium).
- Class K: Kitchen fires (cooking oils and fats).
- Explain how different types of fire extinguishers work:
- Water extinguishers: Cool the fuel.
- Foam extinguishers: Smother the fire and prevent oxygen from reaching the fuel.
- Carbon dioxide extinguishers: Displace oxygen.
- Dry chemical extinguishers: Interrupt the chemical chain reaction.
- Demonstrate (if possible and safe) or show a video of how to properly use a fire extinguisher using the PASS method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
IV. Fire Safety (5 minutes)
- Discuss basic fire safety measures:
- Smoke detectors: Importance of having them and checking batteries regularly.
- Escape plans: Develop and practice a home fire escape plan.
- Stop, Drop, and Roll: What to do if clothing catches fire.
- Importance of not playing with matches or lighters.
- Discuss the importance of calling 911 in case of a fire.
V. Activity: Fire Safety Scenario Discussions (5 minutes)
- Present different fire scenarios (e.g., kitchen fire, electrical fire, campfire gone wrong).
- Have students discuss in small groups what actions they would take in each scenario, focusing on safety and the correct use of fire extinguishers.
- Each group shares their responses with the class.
