Side Objectives

  1. Develop observation and argumentation skills about the urban context.

Introduction

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to prepare students for a deep and critical understanding of urban environments, facilitating the analysis of their transformations over time. This preparation will allow students to engage more effectively in the practical activities that will follow, utilizing prior knowledge and acquired skills.

Warming Up

To start the lesson on 'City: Work, Culture, and Leisure', ask students to use their phones to find an interesting fact about any of these three areas in their city or another city they know. They will have a few minutes to find and share their findings with the class. This helps to contextualize the topic and engage students from the beginning of the lesson.

Initial Reflections

1. What are the main work spaces in our city?

2. How have leisure spaces in the city changed over the years?

3. What are the main cultural landmarks in the city?

4. How has technology influenced work, culture, and leisure in cities?

Development

Duration: 70 - 80 minutes (including initial explanation)

This stage of the lesson plan aims to provide a practical and engaging experience, where students use digital technologies to explore, analyze, and reflect on the different environments of the city and their transformations over time. By working in groups, students develop research, collaboration, and communication skills, applying prior acquired knowledge creatively and contextually.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - 📸 City in Focus: Digital Documentary

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Develop research, filming, and video editing skills, as well as stimulate critical analysis of the transformations in the city over time.

- Description: Students will create a small documentary about the different environments of the city (work, culture, and leisure), using their phones to film and edit videos. They should interview family, friends, or neighbors to gather historical and current information about the addressed environments. The documentary should include comparisons between how these spaces were in the past and how they are currently, highlighting changes and continuities.

- Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Instruct students to choose a central theme: work, culture, or leisure.

  • Each group must plan and distribute tasks (who will film, who will do the interviews, etc.).

  • Guide students to conduct interviews with family, friends, or neighbors using their phones.

  • Ask students to capture images and videos of places relevant to the chosen theme.

  • Students must edit the collected material using free video editing apps available on their phones.

  • Finally, the groups should present their documentaries to the class, explaining the main changes and continuities observed.

Activity 2 - 🏙️ Urban Planner Game: Planning the City of Dreams

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Encourage creativity, teamwork, and the application of knowledge about urbanism, sustainability, and technology.

- Description: In this activity, students will use digital design tools (such as Google SketchUp) to create a fictional urban planning that involves work, culture, and leisure spaces. They must consider modern needs and the challenges of today's cities, proposing innovative and sustainable solutions.

- Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Instruct students to discuss the main characteristics and needs of a modern city.

  • Guide students to use digital design tools (Google SketchUp or similar) to create an urban plan that includes work, culture, and leisure spaces.

  • Students must justify their choices based on real data and current urban challenges (mobility issues, green areas, etc.).

  • Finally, each group must present their urban plan to the class, explaining the proposed solutions and how they meet the modern needs of the city.

Activity 3 - 🎮 Gamifying the City: Digital Explorers

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Promote collaborative and playful learning, using gamification to deepen historical and urban knowledge.

- Description: Using the Minecraft Education Edition platform, students will recreate a part of the city (work, culture, or leisure) and develop gamified activities to explore the changes and continuities in these spaces. They will create missions and challenges that highlight the evolution of urban environments over time.

- Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Instruct each group to choose a central theme: work, culture, or leisure.

  • Students should use the Minecraft Education Edition platform to recreate a part of the city related to the chosen theme.

  • Encourage students to research the history and evolution of that urban space.

  • Students must create missions and challenges within Minecraft that explore changes and continuities in the recreated spaces.

  • Each group should present its recreation and the developed missions, allowing classmates to play and explore their creations.

Feedback

Duration: 20 - 25 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their learning, share insights, and receive constructive feedback. By promoting a group discussion and peer evaluation, students develop communication, empathy, and critical thinking skills, consolidating the knowledge acquired collaboratively and contextually.

Group Discussion

💬 Group Discussion

Promote a group discussion where each group shares their experiences and conclusions from the activities carried out. To facilitate organization, suggest the following outline:

  1. Introduction by the Teacher: Reiterate the importance of the topic and how the different activities contributed to the collective learning about urban environments and their transformations.
  2. Group Presentations: Each group should present a brief summary of what was produced, highlighting the main observations about the changes and continuities in the chosen urban environments.
  3. General Discussion: Encourage students to ask each other questions about their presentations and to debate the different perspectives brought by each group.

Reflections

1. 📌 What were the main changes and continuities you noticed in the studied urban environments? 2. 📌 How has technology impacted work, culture, and leisure spaces over time? 3. 📌 What did you learn about the importance of research and collaboration in the activities carried out?

360° Feedback

🔄 360° Feedback

Instruct students to participate in a 360° feedback session, where each student should receive feedback from their peers in the group. To ensure that the feedback is constructive and respectful, guide students on how to provide positive feedback and suggestions for improvement. Suggest using the following categories for feedback:

  1. Strengths: Identify positive aspects of the peer's work.
  2. Areas for Improvement: Suggest aspects that can be improved in future activities.
  3. Specific Contributions: Highlight unique contributions that enriched the group's work.

Conclusion

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

🔍 Purpose:

This final stage concludes the lesson plan, consolidating learning and connecting the content addressed with the reality of the students. The conclusion allows for reflection on how the knowledge acquired can be applied in real contexts, reinforcing the importance of observing and actively participating in the urban dynamics around us.

Summary

🌆 Summary: City: Work, Culture, and Leisure 🌆

Let's embark on a virtual journey through the city! We explored urban spaces, from ancient work buildings to new cultural centers and super-modern leisure areas. We used our phones to create amazing documentaries, played as urban planners designing dream cities, and even transformed Minecraft into a city full of adventures! The city, with its changes and continuities, revealed itself as a rich tapestry of stories and innovations.

World Connection

🔗 In the Current World:

This lesson showed how urban life is in constant transformation. With digital technology, we captured the changes around us and reflected on how the city evolves. This directly connects with our modern lives, where cities are hubs of innovation, culture, and leisure, constantly adapting to new needs and global challenges.

Practical Application

🏙️ Applications in Daily Life:

Understanding urban dynamics is essential to perceive our role in this environment. Through knowledge of work, culture, and leisure, we can collaborate for the construction of more inclusive, sustainable cities that adapt to contemporary needs. Whether in our choices of mobility, the cultural activities we support, or the workspaces we frequent, our interaction with the city is constant and determinant for its development.
