Introduction

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to ensure that students understand the main goals of the lesson, connecting them with their pre-existing skills and preparing them for the practical activities that will follow. This phase is essential to situate students in the learning context, giving them clarity on what is expected to be achieved and motivating them to participate actively in the process.

Warming Up

To start the class, explain to the students the importance of knowing how to communicate about family in English, as it helps improve their language skills and also connect with people from different cultures. Ask students to use their cell phones to find an interesting fact about family vocabulary in English and share it with the class. This will help them warm up and get into the mood of the lesson's theme.

Initial Reflections

1. What is your name?

2. How are you?

3. How do you say 'Hello' in English?

4. How do you say 'Good morning' in English?

5. How would you introduce a family member in English?

Development

Duration: (70 - 85 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to promote active and engaging learning, where students are protagonists and use digital technologies to create, interact, and apply the vocabulary learned in realistic and modern contexts. The activities are designed to reinforce prior knowledge and provide a dynamic and fun learning experience.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Influential Family on Instagram 📸

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Practice family vocabulary and greetings in English in a contextualized and fun way, using social media.

- Description: Students will create a fictional Instagram account for the family. Each group of students will be responsible for one 'family member' (father, mother, son, daughter, grandfather, grandmother, etc.) and will need to create posts, stories, and small biographies for these characters. They must use English to write the descriptions and interactions.

- Instructions:

  • Split the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Each group will be responsible for creating a fictional Instagram account for a family. They can use apps like Canva to create the photos and posts.

  • Students should create profiles for each family member and include biographies, hobbies, and personal details. Everything must be written in English.

  • Ask students to make daily fictional posts, like a photo of the ‘father’ going to work with the caption 'Good morning! Time to go to work.' or a photo of the ‘mother’ cooking with the caption 'Cooking dinner for the family!'.

  • Encourage students to interact with the 'posts' from other groups by commenting in English.

Activity 2 - Family Game in Minecraft 🏠

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Use a popular game to contextualize and practice family vocabulary and greetings in English.

- Description: Students will use Minecraft to build a 'family house'. Each group of students will be responsible for different parts of the house and different family members. They must communicate entirely in English during the construction and create signs informing about each room and family member.

- Instructions:

  • Split the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Each group should connect to a Minecraft server, where they will have a space to build the 'family house'.

  • Determine that each group will be responsible for one part of the house (living room, kitchen, bedrooms, etc.) and for representing one family member.

  • Students must communicate in English throughout the construction, using family vocabulary.

  • Ask students to create signs in English for each room and person in the house, for example, 'This is the kitchen where mother cooks' or 'This is the bedroom of the parents'.

  • In the end, each group must present their construction in English to the rest of the class.

Activity 3 - Family Quiz Show! 🎤

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Review and reinforce family vocabulary and greetings in English in a playful and competitive way.

- Description: Create an interactive quiz show using the Kahoot! app where students will answer questions related to family vocabulary and greetings in English. Students will work in groups and compete to see who gets the most answers correct.

- Instructions:

  • Split the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Using Kahoot!, create a quiz with questions based on family vocabulary and greetings (for example, 'How do you say good morning in English?', 'What is the word for mother in English?').

  • Explain the game rules and how to participate in the Kahoot! quiz.

  • Students must access Kahoot! on their cell phones and enter the quiz code to participate.

  • During the quiz, encourage students to discuss the answers in their groups before selecting the final answer.

  • At the end of the quiz, reveal the results and award the winning group with a digital certificate created in Canva.

Feedback

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to promote reflection on learning experiences, allowing students to critically and constructively assess what they have learned. Group discussion and 360° feedback help consolidate acquired knowledge, providing an opportunity for students to recognize their strengths and areas for improvement, as well as learning to give and receive feedback in a respectful and productive manner.

Group Discussion

After completing the main activities, promote a group discussion where each group will share their experiences and conclusions. Follow this brief script to introduce the discussion:

  1. Introduce the Discussion: Explain the importance of reflecting on what has been learned and how the experience was. Highlight that sharing insights can enrich everyone's learning.
  2. Invite Groups to Share: Ask each group to choose a representative to share their experiences with the activities, what they learned, and the challenges they encountered.
  3. Encourage Participation: Encourage students to ask questions and comment on the experiences shared by their peers. Remind them to be respectful and constructive in their comments.

Reflections

1. What did you enjoy doing the most during the activities? Why? 2. Was there any challenge that you or your group faced? How did you solve it? 3. How do you think these activities helped improve your vocabulary and communication skills in English?

360° Feedback

Instruct students to carry out a 360° feedback stage, where each student will receive feedback from other members of the group they worked with. Guide the class to ensure that the feedback is constructive and respectful. Use the following guide to structure the feedback:

  1. Positive Feedback: Each student should highlight something positive they observed in their peers during the activities (e.g., 'I liked how you collaborated with the group's ideas.').
  2. Areas for Improvement: Next, each student should suggest an area for improvement constructively (e.g., 'It would be great if you could speak a little louder so everyone can hear your ideas.').
  3. Personal Reflection: Encourage each student to reflect on the feedback received and how they can use it to improve their skills.

Conclusion

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

🎯 Purpose 🎯: The purpose of this stage is to consolidate learning by reviewing and reflecting on the main points of the lesson in a creative and engaging way. By connecting content with real life and the current world, this conclusion reinforces the relevance of what has been learned and motivates students to use these skills outside the classroom. It's a moment to celebrate the knowledge gained and recognize everyone's efforts! 🌟
