Mathematical Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a practice that involves focusing attention on the present moment, helping to improve concentration and reduce anxiety. In the context of this lesson, the practice of Mindfulness will prepare students to approach math content in a calmer and more focused manner. The activity involves deep breathing and fully attending to the present moment, allowing students to enter a state of mental and emotional readiness for learning.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet firmly on the ground and their hands resting on their laps.

2. Ask them to close their eyes or focus their gaze on a point in front.

3. Guide the students to inhale deeply through their nose, counting to four, and then exhale slowly through their mouth, also counting to four. Repeat this breathing cycle three times.

4. After the deep breaths, guide students to pay attention to the sensations in their body, starting from their feet and slowly moving up to their head. Ask them to notice any tension and gently try to relax those areas.

5. Next, ask the students to focus on their natural breathing, observing the movement of air entering and exiting the body, without trying to control it.

6. After a few minutes, ask the students to slowly open their eyes and bring their attention back to the classroom, ready to initiate the math lesson.

2. Division is the mathematical operation that consists of splitting a value (dividend) into equal parts, each represented by a divisor. The result of this operation is the quotient. When the division is not exact, a value called remainder is left over.

4. When dividing 10 by 3, we have that 10 ÷ 3 = 3 with a remainder of 1. This means that 10 divided into equal parts of 3 results in 3 complete parts and leaves 1.

5. Divisions with the Same Remainder

6. Two divisions can have the same remainder even if the dividends and divisors are different. For example, when dividing 14 by 4, we get 14 ÷ 4 = 3 with a remainder of 2. And when dividing 18 by 4, we get 18 ÷ 4 = 4 with a remainder of 2. This shows that the same remainder can arise in different divisions.

1. Divide the class into groups of 3-4 students.

2. Give each group a set of division problems.

3. Ask each group to solve the divisions, noting the quotients and remainders.
