Disease Prevention

Objectives (5 minutes)

  1. Understand the importance of disease prevention: Students should be able to understand why it is important to prevent diseases and how prevention can help maintain good health. This can include explaining how diseases can be spread and the role that hygiene plays in prevention.

  2. Identify hygiene and health practices: Students should be able to identify everyday hygiene and health practices that can help prevent diseases. This can include proper handwashing, using tissues when sneezing or coughing, and the role of vaccination in preventing diseases.

  3. Apply the knowledge acquired: Students should be able to apply the knowledge acquired about disease prevention and hygiene practices in their daily lives. This can include demonstrating how to wash their hands properly or discussing how they can help prevent the spread of disease at home or at school.

Introduction (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Review of previous content: The teacher will begin by reminding students about what they have previously learned about the human body and the importance of taking care of it. This can include topics such as the importance of healthy eating, sleep, and physical activity. (5 minutes)

  2. Problem situations: The teacher then proposes two problem situations for the students:

    • Imagine that two of your friends at school are sick. How do you think this could have happened?

    • You are playing in the park and you need to sneeze. What would you do to not spread germs?

These situations will help arouse students' interest in the topic and start a discussion about disease prevention. (5 minutes)

  3. Contextualization: The teacher then explains that there are many different types of diseases, some more serious than others. He/she can use examples that are relevant to the students, such as the flu, which many of them may have already had, or colds. The teacher may also mention the importance of getting vaccinated, using examples such as the annual flu shot. The teacher may also mention the importance of disease prevention in a broader context, such as the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected the entire world. (5 minutes)

  4. Gaining students' attention: To gain students' attention, the teacher can share some curiosities related to the topic:

    • Did you know that hands are one of the main ways germs are spread? That's why handwashing is so important for preventing diseases.

    • And did you know that when we sneeze, small droplets can travel up to 2 meters away? That's why it's important to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough.

These curiosities will help foster students' curiosity about the topic and the importance of disease prevention.

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  1. Disease prevention theory and hygiene practices: (10 - 15 minutes)

    • The teacher will begin by explaining the theory of disease prevention. He/she can use a slide projector or a blackboard to draw examples. The teacher should make sure that the students understand the concept of "germs" and how they can be spread from person to person.

    • The teacher will then discuss hygiene practices that are important for preventing diseases, such as washing hands properly, covering your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough, and using tissues. The teacher can use illustrations or practical demonstrations to help students better understand these concepts.

    • The teacher should also discuss the importance of vaccination in preventing diseases, using examples of vaccines that students may be familiar with, such as the flu vaccine.

  2. "Healthy Habits Bingo" Activity: (5 - 10 minutes)

    • After the theoretical explanation, the teacher can introduce the "Healthy Habits Bingo" activity. The teacher should prepare Bingo cards with images or words representing different hygiene and health practices.

    • Each student will receive a card and the teacher will draw cards with the hygiene and health practices. Students will mark the card whenever they have the habit mentioned. The goal is to fill the card horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

    • While students play, the teacher circulates around the room, asking questions and starting discussions about the hygiene and health practices, reinforcing the importance of each one in disease prevention.

  3. "Germ Adventure" Activity: (5 - 10 minutes)

    • For the second activity, the teacher can propose the "Germ Adventure". The teacher divides the class into groups and distributes to each group a sheet with a disease scenario and a series of actions to be taken by the characters to prevent the spread of germs.

    • Students must then discuss in groups and decide which actions in the scenario are most appropriate to prevent the spread of the disease.

    • After the group discussion, each team will have the opportunity to share their conclusions with the class, allowing students to learn from each other and reinforce what was learned during the class.

These fun and interactive activities will help consolidate the knowledge acquired about disease prevention and hygiene practices, in a fun and engaging way for students.

Feedback (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Group discussion: (5 - 7 minutes)

    • The teacher will gather all the students in a large circle for a group discussion. Each group will have the chance to share their answers and conclusions from the "Germ Adventure" activity.

    • During the discussion, the teacher will encourage students to explain the reasoning behind their decisions, promoting reflection and deeper understanding of the topic.

  2. Connection with theory: (3 - 5 minutes)

    • The teacher will then make the connection between the students' conclusions and the theory discussed earlier. He/she can highlight how the students' decisions relate to the hygiene and health practices that help prevent diseases.

    • The teacher can also reinforce important concepts, such as the importance of washing hands properly and covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough.

  3. Individual reflection: (2 - 3 minutes)

    • To conclude the lesson, the teacher will propose that students make an individual reflection. They will be asked to think about what they learned in class and answer two simple questions:

      1. What is the hygiene practice you learned the most about today and why is it important for disease prevention?

      2. What will you do differently in relation to disease prevention after this lesson?

    • The teacher will give students a minute to reflect on these questions. Then, some students will be invited to share their answers with the class, promoting the exchange of experiences and learning among peers.

This feedback will allow the teacher to assess students' understanding of the topic and reinforce the most important concepts. In addition, individual reflection will encourage students to think critically about what they have learned and apply the acquired knowledge in their daily lives.

Conclusion (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Lesson Summary: (2 - 3 minutes)

    • The teacher will summarize the main points covered during the lesson, recalling the importance of disease prevention and the hygiene and health practices discussed. He/she can use the blackboard or slides to highlight the key points and reinforce the students' memory.

    • The teacher will also recap the activities carried out, such as "Healthy Habits Bingo" and "Germ Adventure", reminding students of the conclusions and lessons learned.

  2. Connection between Theory and Practice: (1 - 2 minutes)

    • The teacher will explain how the fun and interactive activities carried out during the lesson helped connect theory with practice. He/she will emphasize how the group discussion and individual reflection allowed students to apply the acquired knowledge and reflect on the importance of disease prevention in their daily lives.
  3. Extra Materials: (1 minute)

    • To complement the learning, the teacher will suggest some extra materials for the students. This may include children's books about the human body and health, educational videos available online, or interactive games that reinforce the concepts learned in class. The teacher can prepare a list of these materials and share them with students and their guardians.
  4. Importance of the Topic: (1 - 2 minutes)

    • Finally, the teacher will reinforce the importance of the topic covered for the students' daily lives. He/she can mention examples of how the hygiene and health practices discussed in class can help prevent the spread of diseases not only at school, but also at home and in the community.

    • The teacher can also highlight how disease prevention is a relevant and current topic, especially in the face of events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the knowledge acquired in class can help students stay healthy and protect others.

This conclusion will allow the teacher to end the lesson effectively, reinforcing the main learning points and encouraging students to continue exploring the topic on their own. In addition, by highlighting the relevance of the topic to everyday life, the teacher will help students understand the practical importance of what they have learned.
