Spelling and Reading of the Initial H

Objectives (5 minutes)

  1. Spelling of the letter H: Teach students the correct spelling of the letter 'h' and its applications in forming everyday words.

  2. Recognition of the letter H in words: Provide students with the ability to recognize the letter 'h' in words, both at the beginning and in the middle of them, and understand its sound.

  3. Development of reading and writing skills: Promote the practice of reading and writing words that contain the letter 'h', allowing students to become familiar with the use and function of this letter in the process of written communication.

Secondary Objectives:

  • Expand vocabulary: Through the introduction of new words, students will be exposed to a greater number of terms, thus expanding their vocabulary.

  • Stimulate creativity: Through playful and interactive activities, students will be encouraged to think creatively and express themselves in an autonomous and original way.

Introduction (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Review of previous content: The teacher will start the lesson by reminding students about the importance of studying letters and their use in forming words. Some words known to students containing other letters already studied will be presented. For example: 'A' for love, 'B' for ball, 'C' for house, etc.

  2. Problem situations: Next, the teacher will present two problem situations to arouse students' curiosity. The first: 'Have you noticed that in some words we speak or write, there is a different sound that seems like it didn't need to be there?'. The second: 'Have you tried to write the word 'Today' without the 'H'? How did it turn out?'. These questions aim to draw students' attention to the importance of 'H' and the need for its study.

  3. Contextualization: The teacher will explain that 'H' is a very special letter, as it has no sound of its own but is essential in some words, especially at the beginning of them. Examples of contextualized names of people, animals, and objects that start with the letter 'H' can be used to show how it is used in everyday writing. For example: Henrique, Helena, hippopotamus, helicopter, etc.

  4. Introduction to the topic: To introduce the topic in a fun way, the teacher can tell the story of an imaginary character who lost his 'H' and therefore could not pronounce some words correctly. The character can be represented by a drawing or puppet, which will make the story more interesting for the students. The teacher can use this story to reinforce the importance of the letter 'H' in word formation and written communication.

  5. Capturing students' attention: To make the introduction more lively and captivate students' attention, the teacher can propose two challenges. The first is a 'Word Puzzle', where students must put together words that start with the letter 'H' using shuffled word cards. The second challenge is a 'Memory Game of Words with H', where students must find cards with words containing the letter 'H'. Both games can be prepared in advance by the teacher and are great tools to review the content and spark students' interest.

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

Activity 1 suggestion: Captain H's Treasure Hunt (15 - 20 minutes)

  1. Game Preparation and Materials: The teacher prepares a series of cards with words that start with the letter 'H' and hides them around the classroom or in an outdoor space, if available. Each card should contain an image and the correctly spelled word. Students will be divided into teams, and each team will receive a treasure map (a piece of paper with a simple drawing of the space where the cards are) and a magnifying glass (or a marker) to find them. The teacher will also need a list of the words on the cards to monitor the teams' progress.

  2. Game Rules: The teacher explains that Captain H has hidden a treasure in the classroom and that the teams need to find it. To find the treasure, they must find the cards with words that start with the letter 'H' and mark on the map where they found it. The team that finds the most cards correctly and marks the most locations on the map where they were found, wins.

  3. Game Start: The teams start searching for the cards. When a team finds a card, all team members must read the word aloud. The teacher can help teams decode words if necessary. If the word is spelled incorrectly, the teacher corrects it and explains why the correct spelling has the letter 'H' at the beginning.

  4. End of the Game: The game continues until all words have been found or the allotted time for the activity is up. The teacher then collects the cards, and the teams compare the locations marked on their maps. The teacher checks the maps to determine the winning team.

Activity 2 suggestion: The H Treasure Hunt (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Game Preparation and Materials: The teacher prepares a series of words that start with the letter 'H' and hides them around the classroom. Each word will be on a colored piece of paper and will have a task written on the back. Tasks can be as simple as 'Take a jump', 'Do 5 jumping jacks', 'Sing a song with the letter 'H'', etc. Tasks should be age-appropriate and suitable for the available space.

  2. Game Rules: The teacher explains that words starting with the letter 'H' are hidden around the room and that they are on an 'H Treasure Hunt'. To find them, students must complete the task written on the back of the paper.

  3. Start of the Game: Students are divided into teams, and each team receives the first task. When the task is completed, they receive one of the hidden words. They then decode the word, identify the 'H' at the beginning, and read it aloud. The teacher reinforces the importance of 'H' in word formation.

  4. End of the Game: The game continues until all words are found or until the allotted time for the activity is up. Teams must then form sentences or short texts using the words they found. The teacher circulates around the room, assisting students and correcting any spelling errors. In the end, each team reads their sentences aloud to the class.

Both activities are playful, interactive, and promote teamwork. They also have a physical component that helps engage students and maintain focus. The teacher can choose which activity is most appropriate for the class based on available time and resources.

Return (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion (5 - 7 minutes): After completing the activities, the teacher gathers all students in a large circle for a group discussion. Each team will have the opportunity to share their findings and experiences during the game. The teacher can ask questions like: 'How many 'H's' did you find?'; 'Did you find it easy or difficult to find words with 'H'?'; and 'Were you able to form sentences with the words you found?'. This discussion will allow students to reflect on what they have learned and foster interaction among teams.

  2. Connection to theory (3 - 5 minutes): After the discussion, the teacher will make the connection between practical activities and the theory presented at the beginning of the lesson. They can ask: 'Did you notice how important the letter 'H' is in some words?'; 'Did you understand why the 'H' was at the beginning of the words you found?' and 'Why is the 'H' important in word formation?'. The teacher can take this opportunity to remind students of the importance of each letter in word formation and reinforce the meaning and use of 'H'.

  3. Final Reflection (2 - 3 minutes): To conclude the lesson, the teacher proposes that students reflect for a minute on what they have learned. They can ask two simple questions to guide this reflection:

    • 'What did you find most interesting about the letter 'H'?'
    • 'How can you use what you learned today in everyday reading and writing?'.

These questions encourage students to think critically about the lesson content and apply it in practical situations.

  4. Teacher Feedback (1 minute): Finally, the teacher thanks everyone for their participation and provides brief feedback on the lesson. They can praise students' effort and collaboration during the activities, reinforce key points of the lesson, and express the expectation that students continue to practice and improve their reading and writing skills at home.

This return stage is essential to consolidate students' learning, stimulate reflection and application of the content learned, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the lesson. Additionally, it is an opportunity for the teacher to reinforce important concepts and motivate students to continue learning.

Conclusion (5 - 10 minutes)

  1. Summary of Contents (2 - 3 minutes): The teacher begins the conclusion of the lesson by summarizing the main points covered. They recap the importance of the letter 'H' in word formation and the correct way to write it. The teacher can then recall the words found during the practical activities and emphasize the presence of 'H' in each of them.

  2. Connection between Theory and Practice (2 - 3 minutes): Next, the teacher explains how the lesson connected theory to practice. They emphasize that although 'H' does not have its own sound, it is a very important letter in some words, especially at the beginning of them. The teacher will highlight that through practical activities, students were able to experience the importance of 'H' in writing and reading words.

  3. Extra Materials (1 - 2 minutes): To complement students' learning, the teacher can suggest some extra materials. This may include interactive online games that help reinforce the recognition of the letter 'H' and its function in word formation. The teacher can also recommend books or websites with stories that contain many words with 'H' so that students can practice reading in a fun way.

  4. Importance of the Subject (1 - 2 minutes): Finally, the teacher emphasizes the importance of the subject taught for students' daily lives. They explain that by understanding the function of 'H' in word formation, students will be able to read and write more fluently and accurately. The teacher also stresses that the lesson was not only about the letter 'H', but also about the importance of study, teamwork, and critical reflection.

  5. Closing (1 minute): The teacher concludes the lesson by thanking everyone for participating in the activities and showing so much effort and enthusiasm! They remind students of the importance of 'H' in word formation and encourage them to continue practicing reading and writing at home. They say something like: 'Congratulations to everyone for participating in the activities and showing so much effort and enthusiasm! Always remember the importance of 'H' in word formation and keep practicing reading and writing at home. See you in the next lesson!'.

The conclusion is an essential part of the lesson as it helps consolidate learning, reinforce key concepts, and motivate students to continue learning. Additionally, the connection between theory and practice, the suggestion of extra materials, and the reflection on the importance of the subject help enrich learning and make it more meaningful for students.
