Lesson Plan | Active Learning | Cultural Heritage, Tangible and Intangible

KeywordsCultural Heritage, Material and Immaterial, Cultural Identity, Artistic Expressions, Engagement, Collaboration, Creativity, Theater, Exhibition, Treasure Hunt, Cultural Preservation, Critical Reflection, Community Integration
Required MaterialsSchool maps, Markers for maps, Printed clues, Miniatures of monuments, Videos of folk dances, Paper, Glue, Scissors, Recyclable items, Devices for video playback, Materials for dramatization (costumes, props)

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

This stage of the lesson plan aims to clearly establish the objectives that will guide activities and discussions in the classroom. By defining what is expected to be achieved, students are encouraged to think critically about how the arts reflect and preserve the culture and history of a people. This is essential for them to link their prior knowledge of the topic with the practical activities that will be carried out, thus maximizing their learning and engagement during the lesson.

Main Objectives:

1. Understand the importance of cultural heritage, both material and immaterial, and its influence on the identity and history of a people.

2. Relate different forms of artistic expression to the concepts of material and immaterial heritage, identifying concrete examples in their community or region.

Side Objectives:

  1. Stimulate curiosity and respect for cultural diversity through the exploration of different cultural heritages.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

This stage of the lesson plan serves to engage students and connect the knowledge they acquired at home with practical and relevant situations. By confronting problem situations and contextualizing the importance of cultural heritage with real and impactful examples, students are encouraged to think critically about the role of art in the conservation of culture and the formation of a community's identity.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine that the city hall of your town decided to build a new shopping center on the site where an old theater, considered a cultural heritage, currently exists. Discuss with your colleagues: What would be the impact of this decision on local culture?

2. Think of a traditional festival in your community that has been passed down from generation to generation. How would this tradition help new residents better understand local culture? Discuss how knowledge about traditions can facilitate integration and mutual respect.

Contextualization

The importance of cultural heritage is directly linked to its ability to tell the history of a people and connect generations. For example, when we talk about the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro, we do not mention just a party, but an event that encapsulates the history, social struggles, and cultural evolution of Brazil over the years. These heritages, whether in the form of monuments or oral traditions, serve as a window to the past and a mirror of our contemporary values.

Development

Duration: (75 - 80 minutes)

The development stage aims for the practical application of prior knowledge acquired by students about cultural heritage, material and immaterial. Through playful and collaborative activities, this stage allows students to explore and deepen their understanding of the importance of cultural heritages and how they influence and are an integral part of our identity and history. Each activity is designed to be both educational and fun, engaging students creatively and interactively.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Cultural Treasure Hunt

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop research and teamwork skills while learning about different cultural heritages.

- Description: In this activity, students will be divided into groups of up to 5 members and will receive a map of the school with marked points, where each point represents a 'cultural treasure'. Each treasure will be a representation of a material or immaterial cultural heritage (such as a miniature of a famous monument, a video of a folk dance, etc.). Students will need to use clues to locate each treasure and answer questions related to what they represent.

- Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Hand out a map of the school with marked points to each group.

  • Provide clues that help them locate the treasures.

  • At each point, students must answer a question about the found heritage.

  • Each correct answer earns points; the group with the most points at the end wins.

Activity 2 - Setting Up Our Exhibition

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Promote creativity and understanding of cultural diversity through art and presentation.

- Description: Students will be challenged to create an exhibition in small groups, representing cultural heritages from their region or different parts of the world. They will need to use recyclable materials to build models of material heritages or prepare presentations of immaterial heritages (dances, music, etc.).

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups of up to 5 members.

  • Each group chooses a material or immaterial cultural heritage to represent.

  • Provide materials such as paper, glue, scissors, and recyclable items.

  • Students build a model or prepare a presentation about their chosen heritage.

  • Each group presents their work to the class, explaining the cultural significance of the chosen heritage.

Activity 3 - Heritage Drama

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Foster understanding and appreciation of cultural heritage through theater, also enhancing oral expression and collaboration skills.

- Description: Students will create short theater plays that involve the history and importance of a specific cultural heritage. Each group will choose a heritage, research its history and meaning, and then write and present a dramatization that teaches these aspects to their classmates.

- Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Each group chooses a cultural heritage (material or immaterial).

  • Students research their heritage and write a short play.

  • The groups rehearse their plays.

  • Each group presents their play to the class.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage of the lesson plan is to allow students to share and reflect on what they have learned, consolidating the knowledge acquired through practical activities. This discussion helps reinforce the importance of cultural heritage and encourages students to think about how they can act as agents of cultural preservation in their own communities. Furthermore, it promotes communication and critical argumentation skills.

Group Discussion

Facilitate an open group discussion, where each group shares their learnings and discoveries from the activities. Start the discussion with a general review, asking about the experiences of the groups during the activities. Encourage students to reflect on the impact of cultural heritage on society and their own lives. Use this moment to connect different points of view and highlight the diversity of cultural interpretations and expressions.

Key Questions

1. Which cultural heritage did you find most interesting and why?

2. How can the study of cultural heritages help preserve the history and identity of a community?

3. In what ways can you contribute to the preservation of cultural heritages in your own community?

Conclusion
