Introduction

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

This stage aims to ensure that students have a clear understanding of what will be covered in class, providing a focused approach to the study of linguistics and semiotics, and preparing them for practical activities that make them protagonists of their own learning.

Warming Up

Start the class by addressing the importance of linguistics and semiotics in daily communication. Explain that these concepts are present in virtually everything we see and hear, from road signs to text messages. Then, ask students to use their cell phones to search for an interesting or curious fact about linguistics or semiotics. Give them a few minutes to find and write down that fact.

Initial Reflections

1. What is a sign in semiotics?

2. What is the difference between verbal and non-verbal language?

3. Can you give an example of a symbol that we use frequently?

4. How do emojis play a role in digital communication?

5. Why is it important to understand how signs and symbols work?

Development

Duration: 70 - 75 minutes

This stage aims to provide students with a practical and interactive experience with linguistics and semiotics, using digital tools and everyday situations. Through the proposed activities, students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge creatively, collaboratively, and contextually, deepening their understanding of verbal and non-verbal communication.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Emojis as the New Alphabet

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Understand and explore non-verbal communication through the use of emojis, analyzing how signs and symbols are used to convey meanings.

- Description: Students will explore how emojis function as a form of non-verbal language and how they can be used to convey complex messages. Each group must create a short story using emojis, which will be shared on social media or in a private messaging group for analysis and discussion.

- Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Ask each group to choose a theme for their story (e.g., friendship, adventure, mystery).

  • Using messaging apps or social media, create a short story using only emojis.

  • Share the created story with other groups and ask them to try to interpret the message.

  • Lead a discussion on how the different symbols (emojis) were used and understand the meanings attributed to them.

Activity 2 - Digital Influencer for a Day

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Explore the creation of digital content as an educational strategy, understanding how different forms of media can effectively convey complex messages.

- Description: Students will become digital influencers for a day, creating multimedia content (videos, posts, stories) that explain concepts of linguistics and semiotics. Each group should choose an aspect of the topic and create an educational campaign to share on social media.

- Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Ask each group to choose a subtopic related to linguistics and semiotics (e.g., signs, verbal vs. non-verbal language, symbols in everyday life).

  • Using cell phones, students must create different types of content: an explanatory video, a post with image and text, and an interactive story.

  • Share the created content on the school's social media or on a private platform.

  • Analyze and discuss with students the reception and engagement of the audience with the created content.

Activity 3 - Symbol Hunt

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Understand the practical application of signs and symbols in digital communication through a treasure hunt that promotes research skills, critical analysis, and presentation.

- Description: Students will participate in a digital treasure hunt, where they must find and analyze various signs and symbols on different digital platforms (social media, websites, apps). Each group must document their findings and make a presentation about their use and meaning.

- Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Provide a list of signs and symbols that students must find on different digital platforms.

  • Ask students to use cell phones and computers to find these signs and symbols, documenting where and how they were used.

  • After finding them, each group should prepare a presentation on the meaning and context of use of the signs and symbols found.

  • Present the results and lead a discussion on the interpretation of the different signs and symbols in digital communication.

Feedback

Duration: 20 - 25 minutes

This stage aims to promote reflection and critical evaluation of the activities carried out, allowing students to share their perceptions and learnings. Through group discussion and constructive feedback, students practice communication, collaboration, and self-assessment skills, consolidating the knowledge acquired in a practical and meaningful way.

Group Discussion

Promote a group discussion with all students, where each group shares the lessons learned while carrying out the proposed activities. Follow this outline to introduce the discussion:

  1. Start by asking students about their experiences and perceptions during the activities.
  2. Ask each group to present a summary of their activity, highlighting the challenges faced and the solutions found.
  3. Encourage students to discuss what they found most interesting or surprising about the use of signs and symbols in digital communication.
  4. Conclude by highlighting the importance of understanding linguistics and semiotics in the context of modern communication.

Reflections

1. How has the use of emojis and other symbols changed the way you understand and interpret messages? 2. What were the biggest challenges in creating digital content about linguistics and semiotics? How were they overcome? 3. In what way did this experience make you rethink communication in everyday life, especially in the digital age?

360° Feedback

Instruct students to carry out a 360° feedback step, where each student must receive feedback from their group peers. Guide the class to follow these guidelines to ensure the feedback is constructive and respectful:

  1. Start with a positive point about the colleague's contribution.
  2. Suggest an area for improvement in a specific and objective manner.
  3. End with a final positive consideration, highlighting the importance of each member's contribution to the group's success.

Conclusion

Duration: 5 - 10 minutes

📚 Goal: This stage aims to reinforce and consolidate the knowledge acquired during the class, connecting it with the real world and highlighting its practical applicability. Additionally, it provides a meaningful and motivating closure for students, emphasizing the importance of learning in a light-hearted and creative way.
