Prefix and Suffix

Lesson Plan | Active Learning | Prefix and Suffix

KeywordsPrefix, Suffix, Morphemes, Word formation, Morphological analysis, Interactive activities, Practical learning, Dramatization, Word construction, Treasure hunt, Group discussion, Engagement, Reflection, Theoretical application, Vocabulary
Required MaterialsCards with morphemes (prefixes and suffixes), Notebooks or sheets of paper for notes, Pens or pencils, Board or surface for presentation, Markers for the board, Setting or space for dramatization

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The objectives stage is crucial for establishing a clear foundation of what is expected for students to learn and achieve by the end of the lesson. By defining clear objectives, students can better direct their focus and efforts during practical classroom activities, thus maximizing the use of classroom time. This stage also serves to align the expectations between teacher and students, ensuring that both have a common understanding of what is essential for learning the topic of Prefix and Suffix.

Main Objectives:

1. Empower students to identify and correctly apply prefixes and suffixes in the formation of new words.

2. Develop students' morphological analysis skills, allowing them to understand how prefixes and suffixes alter the meanings of words.

Side Objectives:

  1. Encourage active participation from students through discussions and practical examples.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The introduction aims to engage students with the content they previously studied at home, using problem situations that prompt them to think critically about the use and effect of prefixes and suffixes. Additionally, the contextualization seeks to connect theoretical learning with practical applications in daily life, increasing the relevance of the topic for students.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine you are reading a book and come across the word 'deconstruct'. What do you think the prefix 'de-' is doing to the meaning of the word 'construct'?

2. Think of a word with the suffix '-tion', like 'action'. How do you think adding this suffix changes the meaning of the word 'act'?

Contextualization

Prefixes and suffixes are like magical tools that transform words into something completely new or with an additional meaning. For example, the prefix 're-' in 'restart' makes the word mean to start again, while the suffix '-ly' in 'quickly' transforms the adjective 'quick' into an adverb describing the speed of the action. This ability to alter and enrich the meanings of words is one of the reasons why understanding prefixes and suffixes is so important.

Development

Duration: (65 - 75 minutes)

The purpose of the Development stage is to allow students to practically and meaningfully apply the knowledge acquired about prefixes and suffixes. Through playful and interactive activities, this stage aims to consolidate students’ understanding of how these morphemes modify the meanings of words, as well as promote collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills. By choosing one of the proposed activities, students will have the opportunity to explore the topic deeply and engagingly, ensuring more effective and lasting learning.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Morpheme Hunt

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Identify and understand the role of morphemes in word formation, applying knowledge of prefixes and suffixes in a practical way.

- Description: In this activity, students will participate in a 'treasure hunt' where the treasure consists of words formed by the morphemes found on cards scattered throughout the room. Each card will contain a morpheme (prefix or suffix) and students will need to combine the cards to form complete words, noting the changes in meaning made by each morpheme.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Explain that each group will receive a set of cards with morphemes.

  • Students should find other groups that have complementary cards to form complete words.

  • Each word formed must be written in a notebook, along with an explanation of how the morpheme altered the original meaning of the base word.

  • The first team to correctly form and explain all the words wins the activity.

Activity 2 - Word Builders

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Stimulate creativity and students’ morphological understanding, as well as develop writing and presentation skills.

- Description: Students will be challenged to create their own words by combining provided prefixes and suffixes, and then use these words in sentences they create themselves. This activity aims not only at morphological understanding but also at developing writing skills.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups of no more than 5 members.

  • Distribute cards containing different prefixes and suffixes to each group.

  • Each group should create as many words as possible by combining a prefix and a suffix.

  • Subsequently, groups must use their words in sentences that make sense and are grammatically correct.

  • Each group will present their words and sentences to the class, explaining the meaning of each formed word.

Activity 3 - Morpheme Dramatization

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Visualize and interactively understand how morphemes alter the meanings of words in a playful manner.

- Description: Students will 'dramatize' the effect of prefixes and suffixes on words. Each group will receive a base word and a morpheme to work with. They will need to create a small scene that illustrates the meaning of the word with the added morpheme.

- Instructions:

  • Form groups of up to 5 students.

  • Assign each group a base word and a morpheme, which may or may not be related.

  • Groups must create a small play that demonstrates the altered meaning of the word with the morpheme.

  • The scenes should be presented to the class, which will attempt to guess the morpheme used and discuss its impact on the word.

  • At the end, discuss with the class the different ways the morphemes were interpreted and how this affects the understanding of words.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate learning through reflection and sharing of experiences. The group discussion allows students to verbalize what they have learned, hear different perspectives, and deepen their understanding of the topic. Furthermore, this moment provides direct feedback to the teacher regarding how much students have absorbed from the content, aiding in evaluating the effectiveness of the activities and identifying possible areas that may need review.

Group Discussion

At the end of the activities, gather all students for a group discussion. Start by asking each group to share their discoveries and experiences from the proposed activities. Encourage students to discuss the different ways prefixes and suffixes were applied and how this altered the meanings of words. This is a moment for students to express their opinions and learnings, and for the teacher to clarify any remaining doubts.

Key Questions

1. Which prefixes or suffixes did you find most interesting and why?

2. How can understanding prefixes and suffixes help improve reading and writing?

3. Was there any word whose meaning you found especially altered by the prefix or suffix used?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The purpose of the Conclusion stage is to ensure that students have a clear and consolidated understanding of the content covered during the lesson. By recapping the main points and connecting theory with practice, this stage helps students visualize the relevance of prefixes and suffixes in their learning and in everyday use of the Portuguese language. Additionally, it reinforces the importance of the topic for the development of critical reading and writing skills.

Summary

In the conclusion of the lesson, the teacher should summarize and recap the concepts of prefixes and suffixes, emphasizing how these morphemes alter the meanings of words. The examples used in the activities should be revisited to ensure that students clearly understand the effects of morphemes on base words.

Theory Connection

Today's lesson connected theory with practice by allowing students to apply the concepts of prefix and suffix in interactive and contextualized activities. This was achieved through games, dramatizations, and word construction, which not only solidified morphological understanding but also demonstrated how these concepts are relevant in daily life and in literature.

Closing

Finally, it is important to highlight the utility of prefixes and suffixes in enriching vocabulary and understanding more complex texts. This understanding not only facilitates reading and writing but also enhances students' expression and analysis capabilities in everyday and academic contexts.
