Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The objective stage is crucial to clearly establish what is expected of students by the end of the lesson. By defining specific and measurable objectives, the direction of teaching is facilitated, as well as the focus of students on the competencies that need to be developed. Main Objectives:

1. Develop the skill to solve mathematical problems involving the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with natural numbers, such as the sum of siblings' stickers.

2. Encourage the practical application of mathematical concepts through playful and contextualized activities, stimulating logical thinking and problem-solving.

  1. Encourage collaboration among students during classroom activities, promoting collective learning and idea exchange.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The introduction aims to engage students through problem situations that revisit and test prior knowledge about mathematical operations with natural numbers, facilitating the transition to more complex activities in the classroom. The contextualization seeks to show the importance and constant presence of these concepts in everyday life, increasing interest and the perception of utility of what was studied at home.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine that two friends, Pedro and João, went to a candy store. Pedro bought 3 candies that cost R$ 0.50 each, and João bought 5 chocolates that cost R$ 1.20 each. Who spent more?

2. A farmer has 4 bags of corn, each bag contains 5 kg. If he sells 3 bags, how much corn will he still have?

3. Consider that a classroom has 30 students and each student has 3 books. How many books are there in total in the room?

Contextualization

Operations with natural numbers are an integral part of our daily life, from the simple act of counting to more complex situations in financial planning. For example, when shopping, we need to sum the value of several products to know how much we spent. In addition, in everyday situations like dividing a cake among friends, we apply division concepts. This contextualization helps students realize the relevance and applicability of mathematical concepts in the real world.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

The development stage is designed to allow students to practically and contextually apply the knowledge acquired about operations with natural numbers. Through playful and collaborative activities, students have the opportunity to solidify their mathematical understanding, improve their calculation and reasoning skills, and learn to work as a team. This section is essential to transform theoretical knowledge into applicable and concrete skills.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Operations Market

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Apply the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in a realistic and collaborative context, developing calculation skills and quick thinking.

- Description: In this activity, the classroom will be transformed into a market, and students will have to make purchases and sales using the four basic mathematical operations. Each group will receive a fictitious amount of money and a list of products with their respective prices. They will need to calculate the total value of purchases, make payments, and receive change, applying addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Distribute envelopes containing fictitious money to each group.

  • Present a list of products with their prices.

  • Ask each group to choose products, calculate the total purchase amount, and pay, simulating interaction with a cashier.

  • The cashiers (other students or the teacher) will verify the calculations and return the correct change, which should be checked by the buyers.

  • Students will record all transactions in a provided table.

Activity 2 - City Builders

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop skills to apply mathematics in planning and design situations, reinforcing the use of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve practical problems.

- Description: Students, organized in groups, will be challenged to build cities on graph paper, where each square represents a unit of measurement (meter, for example). They will need to plan and calculate areas for different buildings, streets, and parks, using mathematical operations to find total areas, missing areas, and distances.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students in groups of up to 5.

  • Give each group a piece of graph paper and ask them to draw a city layout, including buildings, streets, and green spaces.

  • Specify measurements and areas for each type of construction.

  • Students should use mathematical operations to calculate areas and distances, adapting the design as needed.

  • Each group will present their city to their peers, explaining the decisions made and calculations performed.

Activity 3 - The Great Fraction Tournament

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Reinforce and deepen knowledge of operations with fractions, stimulating logical reasoning and healthy competition among students.

- Description: In this activity, students will participate in a tournament where they will compete in a series of challenges involving fractions and operations with natural numbers. Groups will answer questions and solve puzzles related to the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions, accumulating points.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of no more than 5 students.

  • Explain the tournament rules and how points will be distributed.

  • Present the challenges, which may be in the form of questions, mathematical problems, or games.

  • Groups will have a time limit to solve each challenge.

  • Score the groups based on correct answers and solution time.

  • At the end, the group with the most points is declared the winner.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The purpose of this feedback stage is to consolidate learning through reflection and exchange of experiences among students. By discussing collectively, students have the opportunity to verbalize their understanding of mathematical concepts, hearing different perspectives and strategies from their peers. This not only reinforces the acquired knowledge but also develops communication and argumentation skills. The discussion helps identify areas that may need additional review and allows the teacher to assess the effectiveness of the activities carried out.

Group Discussion

Facilitate a group discussion with all students, where each group will share their experiences and learnings from the activities carried out. Start the discussion with a brief introduction: 'Today we explored various ways to apply mathematical operations with natural numbers in everyday contexts and fun challenges. I would like each group to share a situation they found most challenging and how they solved it. Let's start with the group that worked on the 'Operations Market.'
