Required MaterialsCards with descriptions of positions and techniques, Dolls or drawings for combat simulation, Large board simulating a mat, Dice for the board game, Activity stations for physical and theoretical challenges, Materials for answering questions (pens, paper)

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

This stage of the lesson plan aims to establish a solid knowledge base about jiu-jitsu, enabling students to not only understand the sport in technical terms but also appreciate its culture and significance as a martial practice. Clarity in the defined objectives is crucial for guiding subsequent practical activities, ensuring effective and meaningful learning.

Main Objectives:

1. Understand the fundamental characteristics of jiu-jitsu, including its history, philosophy, and values associated with the sport.

2. Identify and explain the belt system in jiu-jitsu, recognizing the meaning and progression criteria of each belt.

3. Describe and name the main techniques of jiu-jitsu, as well as understand the scoring system used in competitions.

Side Objectives:

  1. Stimulate students' interest in practicing martial arts as a means of physical and mental development.
  2. Promote discussion about the importance of respect and discipline, core values in jiu-jitsu.

Introduction

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

This stage of the lesson plan is essential for connecting students' prior knowledge with the lesson to be taught. By using problem-based situations, students are encouraged to apply their knowledge practically and reflectively, which facilitates understanding and retention of the content. Contextualization helps relate jiu-jitsu to real cultural and historical aspects, increasing interest and understanding of the importance and applicability of the sport in everyday life and society.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine you are in a jiu-jitsu competition and need to score quickly to win the match. What techniques would you use considering the scoring rules you studied?

2. Think of a situation where you are a white belt about to be promoted. What criteria do the masters use to decide on your promotion to the next belt?

Contextualization

Jiu-jitsu is not just a form of self-defense, but a practice that teaches discipline, respect, and perseverance. Knowing about the history and philosophy behind jiu-jitsu helps to understand how it spread across the world and became one of the most respected combat sports. Modern jiu-jitsu, as we know it, was largely developed in Brazil based on techniques from Japanese jiu-jitsu, where it gained international fame. This information connects students not only with the technique but also with the spirit and culture surrounding this martial art.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

This section of the lesson plan is dedicated to putting into practice the theoretical knowledge acquired by students about jiu-jitsu. Through playful activities and group challenges, students will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned creatively and engagingly, promoting not only memorization but also the development of teamwork, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Belt Tournament Challenge

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Apply knowledge about techniques and positions in jiu-jitsu in a simulated competitive context, developing strategy and teamwork decision-making skills.

- Description: In this activity, students will be divided into groups, and each group will represent a competitor in a jiu-jitsu tournament. The teacher will create scenarios based on different combat positions, and the groups will need to decide on the best move or technique to score or finish the match, using dolls or drawings to represent the positions.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Each group receives a set of cards that describe different combat positions or situations.

  • The teacher presents a fight scenario, and each group must choose the card that best represents the action they would take.

  • After the choice, a representative from each group explains the choice and their reasoning.

  • Points are awarded based on the effectiveness and creativity of the solutions.

Activity 2 - Belt Journey

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Understand the evolution process in jiu-jitsu, associating each belt with a specific set of skills and knowledge.

- Description: Students, grouped by belt levels, will face a series of physical and theoretical challenges related to jiu-jitsu to advance to the next belt. Each challenge completed will allow them to learn and demonstrate a new technique or move, symbolically progressing in the belt system.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups according to the colors of the jiu-jitsu belts.

  • Prepare activity stations that represent challenges for each belt.

  • Each station has a challenge involving answering theoretical questions or demonstrating a specific technique.

  • Students must complete each station to earn the next belt.

  • The activity ends when all groups reach black belt.

Activity 3 - The Great Jiu-Jitsu Quiz

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Reinforce theoretical knowledge about jiu-jitsu in a fun and interactive way, promoting healthy competition and teamwork.

- Description: In this quiz-style game, students will test their knowledge about the history, techniques, and scoring of jiu-jitsu. Each correct answer allows the group to advance on a board that simulates a mat. The goal is to reach the end of the mat and win the championship.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Prepare a large board on the floor that simulates a mat with various spaces.

  • Each space on the board has a question about jiu-jitsu.

  • Groups roll dice to move on the board and answer questions from the spaces they land on.

  • Correct answers allow advancement to more spaces or even gaining advantages like skipping a turn.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate students' learning through a collaborative reflection on the activities performed. Group discussions allow students to articulate their understanding and share different perspectives, contributing to a deeper understanding of jiu-jitsu. This discussion also helps the teacher assess the effectiveness of the activities and the students' comprehension of the topic.

Group Discussion

Start the discussion with a brief recap of the activities undertaken, highlighting key learnings and difficulties encountered by the students. Encourage each group to share their experiences and observations, focusing on how they applied the theoretical knowledge of jiu-jitsu in practical activities. Encourage everyone to express their opinions on what they enjoyed most and what they found challenging.

Key Questions

1. Which jiu-jitsu techniques did you find most effective during the activities, and why?

2. How did your knowledge of the belt system and scoring influence the decisions you made during the games?

3. Was there any moment during the activities when you felt teamwork was crucial? How did that reflect in the results?

Conclusion

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to ensure that students consolidate and reflect on the knowledge acquired during the lesson. Recapping the main concepts helps with long-term retention of information. Furthermore, discussing the connection between theory and practice, as well as the applications of jiu-jitsu in real life, allows students to visualize the practical and cultural value of this martial art, thereby increasing their engagement and appreciation for the sport.

Summary

In conclusion, it is crucial to summarize the main points discussed about jiu-jitsu. Students learned about the history, philosophy, belt system, main techniques, and scoring system of this sport. The importance of each belt and what is necessary to progress in the sport were thoroughly explored, as well as the strategy and application of techniques in simulated combat situations.

Theory Connection

This lesson effectively connected theory with practice through various interactive activities. Students not only reviewed theoretical content but also applied this knowledge in practical situations that simulated real jiu-jitsu competition scenarios. This allowed for a deeper understanding of the techniques and strategies used in this martial art.

Closing

The importance of jiu-jitsu goes beyond the classroom and the mat; it teaches discipline, respect, and perseverance, which are values applicable in everyday life. Additionally, practicing this martial art improves physical fitness, motor coordination, and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure, valuable skills for personal and professional development.
