Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Introduction

The introduction aims to revisit and reinforce students' previous knowledge about spelling, using problem situations that stimulate critical thinking and review of rules already studied. The contextualization seeks to connect the topic with real life, demonstrating the applicability and importance of studying spelling for effective and correct communication.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Present students with two common spelling errors, such as the confusion between 'mas' and 'mais', and 'seção' and 'sessão'. Ask them to identify in which context each word is correctly used, discussing briefly the rules that govern these choices.

2. Propose a mini text containing intentional spelling errors, such as 'concerteza' and 'agente' (instead of 'com certeza' and 'a gente'). Ask students to correct the errors, encouraging them to explain why each correction is necessary.

Contextualization

Explain the relevance of spelling in daily life, highlighting how common mistakes can alter meanings and lead to misunderstandings in real situations, such as in professional or academic communications. Share a historical fact, such as the origin and changes in the spelling of the Portuguese language over the years, to demonstrate the evolution and importance of spelling rules.

Development

Duration: (65 - 75 minutes)

The Development stage is designed to allow students to practically and creatively apply prior knowledge about spelling, facilitating active learning through playful and collaborative activities. Each proposed activity aims to consolidate the understanding and correction of common spelling errors, promoting interaction among students and critical thinking.

Activity 1 - Spelling Word Search

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop skills in recognizing and correcting spelling errors in a playful and collaborative context.

- Description: Students form groups of up to five members and receive a sheet with a grid of jumbled words and a list of words with common spelling errors. They must find the correct words in the grid, which are jumbled horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and write next to it the correct form as studied previously.

- Instructions:

• Form groups of no more than five students.

• Distribute the activity sheets, which contain a word grid and a list of words with spelling errors.

• Instruct students to find the correct words in the grid, which are jumbled in various directions.

• Students must write next to each found word its correct form.

• At the end, discuss with everyone the corrections made and the most common errors.

Activity 2 - Spelling Race

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Practice the quick correction of words with common errors, stimulating healthy competition and collaborative learning.

- Description: In this activity, each group of students receives cards with misspelled words. The goal is to run to the board and write the correct form of the word. Each student from each group will have the chance to correct at least one word, promoting a dynamic and competitive environment.

- Instructions:

• Divide the class into groups of up to five students.

• Give each group a set of cards with misspelled words.

• One student at a time from each group must run to the board to write the correct form of the word.

• The first group to finish with all words correctly written on the board wins.

• Review the words on the board, discussing the corrections.

Activity 3 - Spelling Theater

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Raise awareness about the importance of correct spelling through an interactive and engaging approach.

- Description: Students, in groups, create short plays involving dialogues with common spelling errors. Each group presents their play and the others must identify and correct the errors in real-time. After the presentations, corrections and the impacts of the errors on dialogue comprehension are discussed.

- Instructions:

• Form groups of up to five students.

• Each group must write a short dialogue including intentional spelling errors.

• The groups present their plays to the class.

• The audience must identify and correct the errors while watching.

• Discuss the corrections and the impact of the errors on effective communication.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

This feedback stage is essential for consolidating the knowledge acquired by students during the practical activities. By discussing in a group, students have the opportunity to reflect on what they learned, share insights and correction strategies, and better understand the consequences of spelling errors. This discussion also serves to reinforce collaborative learning and help students internalize spelling rules more effectively.

Group Discussion

At the end of the activities, gather all students for a group discussion. Start the discussion with an introduction about the importance of spelling in effective communication and how errors can alter meanings. Encourage students to share their experiences during the activities and what they observed about common errors and their corrections.
