Objective

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The aim here is to introduce learners to the topic of natural resource usage, emphasising the importance of acknowledging and understanding the diverse uses of land and water. This session also seeks to enhance learners' socioemotional awareness, allowing them to explore and communicate their feelings related to the topic, improving self-awareness and comprehending the implications of human actions on the environment.

Objective Utama

1. Identify various uses of natural resources, like soil and water, in everyday life across urban and rural environments.

2. Understand the positive and negative effects of using natural resources on our environment and communities.

3. Develop the ability to recognise and articulate emotions related to environmental issues, using the RULER method.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Warmup Activity

Nature's Breath

Guided Deep Breathing

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs with good posture.

2. Instruct them to close their eyes and place their hands on their tummies.

3. Explain that they should inhale deeply through their noses, feeling their tummies expand, and then slowly exhale through their mouths, feeling their tummies contract.

4. Guide them through this breathing exercise for five cycles while they focus on their breath and tummy movement.

5. After five cycles, request students to gently open their eyes and stretch, bringing their focus back to the classroom.

Content Contextualization

Natural resources play a crucial role in our daily lives, whether in the cities or in the platteland. For example, the water we use for drinking, cooking, and sanitation comes from natural sources like rivers and dams. The soil is fundamental for growing the food that ends up on our plates. By understanding how we use these resources, we can make better choices regarding their use and conservation.

Additionally, it’s vital to recognise our emotions when discussing the exploitation and conservation of these resources. Our feelings can impact our choices and actions. By recognising and expressing these emotions constructively, we can positively contribute to the protection of our environment and the sustainability of natural resources.

Development

Duration: (60 - 75 minutes)

Theory Guide

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

1. Natural Resources: Clarify that natural resources are components of the natural world that we utilise for various needs, like water, soil, air, minerals, plants, and animals.

2. Water Use: Specify that water is essential for drinking, agriculture, industry, power generation, and leisure activities. Offer practical examples, such as tap water for drinking, watering plants, or water needed in manufacturing.

3. Soil Use: Explain the significance of soil for farming, constructing homes, and building infrastructure. Use relatable analogies, like a garden thriving because of rich soil.

4. Positive and Negative Impacts: Discuss that while using natural resources can yield benefits, such as food and power generation, it can also lead to challenges like pollution, deforestation, and water shortages.

5. Sustainability: Present the idea of sustainability, indicating it involves the mindful and responsible approach to using natural resources to ensure they are available for future generations. Share examples of sustainable practices, like recycling and careful water usage.

Activity with Socioemotional Feedback

Duration: (35 - 40 minutes)

Map of Natural Resources

In this exercise, learners will craft a visual map showcasing different uses of natural resources in their everyday lives, both in the city and the countryside. They'll have the chance to acknowledge and communicate their feelings regarding the usage and preservation of these resources.

1. Distribute an A3 sheet of paper and drawing materials (crayons, markers, etc.) to each learner.

2. Ask them to draw a map that includes the city and countryside, spotlighting where and how natural resources like water and soil are utilised.

3. Encourage students to include features such as rivers, crops, houses, factories, and other places where natural resources are present.

4. Ask each student to write short descriptions explaining the use of each natural resource depicted on their map.

5. Once they've finished their drawings, invite students to present their maps to the class, sharing their thoughts and feelings about the usage of natural resources.

Discussion and Group Feedback

After the drawing activity, facilitate a talk circle to employ the RULER method. Start by asking students to recognise and share feelings they experienced while making their maps (Happiness? Sadness? Concern?). Then, help them to understand the reasons behind these feelings by asking: 'What made you feel this way when considering the usage of natural resources?'.

Encourage students to name the emotions they observed accurately (e.g., 'I feel anxious about river pollution'). Challenge them to express these emotions suitably, perhaps by documenting a sentence or drawing a symbol on their map. Finally, deliberate on ways to regulate these emotions and make positive decisions, such as conserving water or recycling materials.

Conclusion

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Reflection and Emotional Regulation

After the drawing and discussion sessions, ask students to think about the challenges they faced during the lesson and how they managed their emotions. This reflection can be done through a brief writing assignment or group discussion. Encourage them to recall moments when they felt strong emotions (like frustration while drawing or concern about pollution) and describe how they addressed those feelings. Motivate them to share effective strategies for regulating their emotions and staying focused on the task.

Objective: The aim of this segment is to encourage learners to evaluate their emotional experiences throughout the lesson, identifying effective methods for handling challenging situations. This self-evaluation and emotional regulation practice is key in helping learners develop the abilities to recognise, understand, name, express, and regulate their emotions, thereby fostering greater self-awareness and self-control.

Glimpse into the Future

To wrap up the lesson, ask students to set personal and academic goals linked to the topics discussed. They can jot these down on paper or share them verbally with the class. The goals should outline concrete actions they can undertake to help conserve natural resources, like saving water at home or engaging in recycling activities at school. Additionally, inspire them to consider how these actions can positively affect the environment and their community.

Penetapan Objective:

1. Conserve water while showering and brushing teeth.

2. Sort recyclable waste from non-recyclable waste at home.

3. Take part in tree-planting initiatives at school or in their community.

4. Share their newfound knowledge about the importance of natural resources with friends and family.

5. Cultivate the habit of switching off lights when leaving a room to save energy. Objective: The goal of this section is to enhance students' independence and the practical use of what they learned during the lesson. By establishing personal and academic goals, learners are encouraged to pursue their academic and personal growth, applying the insights they gained about using and conserving natural resources in their daily lives. This promotes a deeper sense of accountability and commitment to environmental sustainability.
