Premises: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class duration, prior student study both with the Book and the beginning of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be carried out during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a large part of the available time.

Objective

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

This objectives stage is vital for setting the learning goals of the lesson. By clearly outlining what students are expected to achieve, the teacher guides both pre-class preparation and in-class activities. This section also helps align expectations and ensures that the focus remains on key topics like pronouns, adverbs, and demonstrative adjectives, all essential for achieving fluency and comprehension in English.

Objective Utama:

1. Empower students to accurately use and write pronouns and adverbs in various contexts, showing a solid understanding of their meanings and grammatical roles.

2. Enhance students' ability to identify demonstrative adjectives and pronouns in texts, reinforcing their semantic and structural understanding.

Objective Tambahan:

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The Introduction phase aims to engage students and revisit previously learned concepts, setting the stage for practical application. By presenting problem-based scenarios, students are encouraged to think critically and creatively apply what they've learned. Contextualizing the content helps connect it to the real world, increasing interest and relevance of the topic.

Problem-Based Situation

1. Ask students to describe a daily scene using as many pronouns and adverbs as they can. For example, 'She quickly opened the door and found her lost keys in the dark room.'

2. Request that students review a short passage from a book or article they've read recently, highlighting all the demonstrative adjectives and pronouns they find. Then, discuss how these words impacted their understanding of the text.

Contextualization

Explain how using pronouns and adverbs correctly, along with identifying demonstrative adjectives, is crucial for clear and precise communication in English. Provide real-life examples where poor word choice could lead to confusion, such as in headlines or during formal and informal conversations. Additionally, give a brief overview of the origin and evolution of some of these words to highlight the richness and complexity of the English language.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

The Development phase is intended to allow students to practically and playfully apply the concepts of adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and their functions in various contexts. This section aims to consolidate learning through activities that promote collaboration, creativity, and attention to grammatical details—components essential for fluent English usage. By participating in these activities, students will develop critical thinking and effective communication skills.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Grammar Detectives

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Practice recognizing and correctly using adjectives and adverbs in narrative contexts.

- Description: Students will split into groups of up to 5 and receive envelopes containing short stories in English. Each story will have adjectives and adverbs highlighted in different colours, but incorrectly used. The students' task is to identify the correct adjectives and adverbs and replace them, making necessary grammatical corrections.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Hand out the envelopes with the stories and coloured markers.

  • Explain that each colour represents a type of word: adjective, adverb, or other.

  • Students must read the stories, identify the highlighted words, and decide on the corrections.

  • After making corrections, each group will present a corrected story to the class, explaining their grammatical choices.

Activity 2 - Building Dialogues

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Encourage creativity in crafting dialogues that accurately utilize pronouns, adverbs, and adjectives.

- Description: In this activity, students will work in groups and receive cards with random words, including pronouns, adverbs, and adjectives. The challenge is to create short, cohesive dialogues that incorporate all the words from the cards. The dialogues will be presented theatrically for the class.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups of up to 5.

  • Distribute the word cards to each group.

  • Explain that they must use all of the words in a coherent dialogue, which must include pronouns, adverbs, and adjectives.

  • Allow time for groups to prepare their dialogues.

  • Each group will present their dialogue to the class, which will try to identify all the words used from the cards.

Activity 3 - Pass the Adjective!

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Reinforce the correct and sequential use of adjectives, adverbs, and other word classes in a fun and interactive way.

- Description: Students will form a line, and at the teacher's signal, the first student must describe the next using an adjective, for example, 'The tall student.' The next student will then use an adverb to describe the third student, and so forth. The goal is to maintain a logical and coherent sequence of descriptions.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into a line.

  • Explain that each student, in turn, must describe the next in line using an adjective, adverb, or other type of word, alternating between them.

  • The teacher should start the game with an example to clarify the rules.

  • If a student makes a mistake, they go to the back of the line, and the next student will have a turn.

  • The game continues until every student has had a chance.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The aim of this stage is to consolidate learning, enabling students to articulate their insights and reflect on the importance of adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns within the English language. The group discussion reinforces knowledge, encourages diverse perspectives, and fosters communication skills in English—key components for language proficiency.

Group Discussion

After the activities, gather all students for a group discussion. Start by briefly reviewing the purpose of the activities, encouraging students to share their experiences and insights. Ask each group to summarize their accomplishments and the key discoveries made during the activities. Motivate them to discuss how the use of adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns impacted their understanding and fluency in English.

Key Questions

1. What were the main challenges your group faced while identifying and correcting the adjectives and adverbs in the stories?

2. How can proper use of pronouns and adverbs change the meaning of a sentence?

3. Was there a moment during the activities where the choice of an adverb or adjective completely altered the meaning of a sentence? If so, please share.

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The purpose of the Conclusion phase is to ensure that students have a clear, consolidated understanding of the topics discussed, linking theoretical learning with practical application. It also serves to underscore the relevance of learning adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns, motivating students to apply this knowledge in real-life situations while recognizing their significance in effective communication in English.

Summary

To wrap up, the teacher should summarize the key points discussed, highlighting definitions and functions of adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and demonstrative adjectives. It's important to recap significant examples from the activities to reinforce understanding. This helps solidify knowledge and ensures students can apply what they've learned in future contexts.

Theory Connection

Throughout the class, the connection between theory and practice was established via interactive activities and discussions, allowing students to apply concepts learned outside of the classroom. Activities like 'Grammar Detectives' and 'Building Dialogues' facilitated not just grammatical practice but also demonstrated the impact of word choice on effective and clear communication in English.

Closing

Finally, the teacher should stress the importance of adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns in daily life, both in written and spoken communication. Emphasize how using these elements correctly can enhance clarity and expressiveness in English discourse, which is crucial in academic, professional, and social settings.
