Premises: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class duration, prior student study both with the Book and the beginning of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be carried out during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a large part of the available time.

Objective

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

This stage is key for directing the attention of both students and teachers during the lesson. By clearly outlining what needs to be learnt, this section acts as a roadmap for the upcoming activities. It ensures that students' prior knowledge and class discussions are in sync with the expected learning outcomes, thereby making effective use of classroom time for practice and concept application, ultimately enhancing learning.

Objective Utama:

1. Enable students to convert sentences from active voice to passive voice, identifying the subject and the doer.

2. Develop the ability to recognize and distinguish passive voice sentences in various texts.

Objective Tambahan:

  1. Encourage active participation from students during class discussions to solidify their understanding of the content.
  2. Promote collaboration and communication skills among students while they work in groups.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The introduction aims to capture students’ interest and emphasize the relevance of learning passive voice in real-life situations. Through problem-based scenarios, students are encouraged to use their prior knowledge in a practical manner, setting the stage for direct application in class. This contextualization links the topic to the real world, boosting students' interest and showcasing its relevance across different fields.

Problem-Based Situation

1. Imagine you’re reading a scientific journal and come across the sentence: 'The new virus has been identified by the research team.' How would you change it to active voice while retaining the original meaning?

2. Consider a news report that states: 'The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci.' How would you rewrite this in active voice, emphasizing the painter?

Contextualization

Passive voice is frequently used in academic, journalistic, and literary texts to highlight the action instead of the doer. For instance, when describing a scientific process in a paper, it’s often better to use passive voice to focus on the process itself, rather than who carried it out. Additionally, when the doer is unknown or unimportant, as in many news stories, passive voice becomes a natural choice. Understanding and mastering passive voice allows students to better interpret various texts and improve their own writing.

Development

Duration: (65 - 75 minutes)

This development stage allows students to practically apply what they’ve learned about passive voice. Working in groups enables discussion and collaboration, reinforcing their learning and developing interpersonal skills. The proposed activities are diverse and challenging, allowing students to explore varied contexts where passive voice is applied, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the topic.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

Each story should include at least five converted sentences from active to passive voice, ensuring coherence and connectivity. This exercise not only practices passive voice but also sharpens narrative skills.

This feedback stage is important for consolidating learning, allowing students to articulate and reflect on their acquired knowledge and developed skills. Sharing experiences and answering key questions gives students a chance to reinforce their understanding, identify any confusion, and learn from each other. This exchange fosters a deeper and more contextual understanding of passive voice, preparing students to apply their knowledge in both practical and academic arenas.

Group Discussion

Start the discussion by inviting each group to share their insights and experiences from the activities. Request a spokesperson from each group to summarize the discussions and conclusions reached. Encourage students to discuss the challenges they faced, the strategies they employed to overcome them, and the most valuable lessons learned about passive voice.

Key Questions

2. How can recognizing and using passive voice be beneficial in real-life contexts, such as understanding academic papers or news articles?

3. Was there any instance during the activities where you had to rethink the use of passive voice? Why?

The conclusion is aimed at reinforcing learning, ensuring students have a clear and consolidated grasp of the topic covered. By summarizing the main aspects of the lesson and relating them to real-world applicability, this stage solidifies students' memories and prepares them to leverage their knowledge in future scenarios. It also emphasizes the significance of the topic in enhancing their English communication skills.
