Lesson Plan | Active Learning | Plural
| Keywords | plural in English, identification of plural and singular, formation of plural, interactive activities, teamwork, card games, practical application, effective communication, pluralization rules, irregular plural forms |
| Required Materials | cards with plural words, writing materials, notebooks or writing sheets, building blocks with plural rules, deck of cards with nouns, prizes for competitive activity |
Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.
Objectives
Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)
The Objectives stage is crucial to guide both the teacher and the students regarding the focus of the class. By clearly establishing what is expected to be achieved, this section helps direct subsequent activities and the assessment of learning. The outlined objectives aim to ensure that students leave the class capable of discerning and accurately applying the plural of nouns in English, a fundamental competence in mastering the language.
Main Objectives:
1. Empower students to correctly identify and apply the plural of nouns in English.
2. Develop the ability to recognize whether a noun is in singular or plural, as well as the formation and exceptions of plural.
Side Objectives:
- Encourage active participation from students in identifying and correcting common errors in the application of noun plurals.
Introduction
Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)
The Introduction phase serves to engage students and connect the content they studied previously with practical application in the classroom. By introducing problem situations, reflection and review of pluralization concepts are stimulated, while contextualization helps to perceive the relevance of the topic in daily life and in broader contexts, enhancing students' interest and motivation.
Problem-Based Situations
1. Ask students to identify and correct the pluralization errors in sentences such as: 'I have two cats' and 'They are watching a movie'.
2. Propose a discussion about the importance of using the plural correctly in communication, using everyday speech examples, such as 'I want a cup of tea' versus 'I want two cups of tea'.
Contextualization
Explain the importance of plural in everyday communication and in formal situations, such as in the workplace and in academic texts. Show how the correct use of the plural can significantly alter the meaning of a sentence, for example, 'The man walks' versus 'The men walk'. Additionally, relate curiosities about irregular plural forms in English, such as 'child' which in plural is 'children'.
Development
Duration: (75 - 80 minutes)
The Development stage is designed to allow students to practically and interactively apply the pluralization concepts they studied previously. Through group activities, such as games and challenges, they will have the opportunity to test and deepen their understanding of plural formation and identification while developing teamwork and healthy competition skills. This approach not only facilitates learning but also makes the educational process more engaging and memorable.
Activity Suggestions
It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities
Activity 1 - Lost Plural Hunt
> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)
- Objective: Develop skills in identifying and applying plurals, as well as promoting teamwork and healthy competition.
- Description: In this playful activity, students will be divided into groups of up to 5 people to participate in a 'treasure hunt' within the classroom. The goal is to find words written on cards that are in plural, hidden in different locations in the environment. Each card contains a clue that leads to the next card, and so on, until all cards are found and the words correctly identified.
- Instructions:
-
Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.
-
Give the first card to each group, which contains the first clue to find the next card.
-
Each card found should be inspected by the students, who must identify whether the word is in plural, explaining their choice.
-
Students should record the words found and their correct plural forms in a notebook or writing sheet.
-
The first group to find all the cards and correctly identify the plurals wins a small prize.
Activity 2 - Plural Builders
> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)
- Objective: Understand the various rules of plural formation and apply them in a practical and visual manner.
- Description: Students, in groups, will receive a set of building blocks where each block represents a part of the process for forming the plural of a noun. They should use these blocks to construct the plural form of various nouns that will be dictated by the teacher. Each block has a color or shape that represents a specific plural formation rule, such as adding 's' or 'es', or changing the vowel.
- Instructions:
-
Form groups of up to 5 students.
-
Dictate a noun in singular to each group, and students must use the blocks to construct the correct plural form.
-
Each block must be used according to the rule it represents, for example, the red block for adding 's'.
-
After the construction, each group explains why they chose each block to form the plural of the noun.
-
The teacher checks if the plural formation is correct and discusses which rules were applied in each case.
Activity 3 - Plural Duel
> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)
- Objective: Reinforce the quick and accurate recognition of noun plurals while promoting a competitive and fun environment.
- Description: In this card game, students in groups will participate in a 'duel' where they must form the correct plural of nouns shown on the cards. Each card contains a noun in the singular, and students must quickly present the correct plural in a competitive format. If they get it right, they earn points; if they get it wrong, they lose points.
- Instructions:
-
Organize groups of up to 5 students and distribute a deck of cards to each group.
-
Show one card at a time. Students have a few seconds to write the plural of the noun shown.
-
At the end of the time, reveal the correct answer and mark points on a visible scoreboard in the room.
-
Continue showing cards until all have been used. The group with the most points at the end of the game wins.
-
Discuss the answers and correct any errors with the group.
Feedback
Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)
The purpose of this stage is to consolidate students' learning, allowing them to reflect on the practical application of the pluralization rules they studied. Through group discussion, students can share insights, correct possible misunderstandings, and reinforce collective knowledge. This exchange of ideas and experiences not only helps solidify learning but also develops argumentation and communication skills among students.
Group Discussion
To start the group discussion, the teacher can ask each group to share their discoveries and experiences during the activities. Suggest they begin by discussing the strategies they used to identify the plurals and how they applied the learned rules. Then, ask each group to point out the main difficulties encountered and how they managed to overcome them. Encourage students to reflect on how the practice influenced their understanding and use of plurals in English.
Key Questions
1. What were the most challenging pluralization rules and how did you overcome them?
2. Was there any noun that you had to discuss a lot in the group to reach an agreement about the plural? How did you resolve that?
3. How did the plural building activity with blocks help visualize and better understand the pluralization rules?
Conclusion
Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)
The purpose of the Conclusion stage is to ensure that students have a clear and consolidated understanding of the topics discussed during the class, reinforcing learning and directly linking it with practice. Additionally, this stage aims to highlight the relevance of studying plural in effective communication, helping students perceive the practical usefulness of what they learned in real-life situations using the English language. The conclusion also serves to close the class in a structured and effective manner, ensuring that all key points have been understood and retained.
Summary
To conclude the class, the teacher should summarize the main points covered about pluralization, reinforcing the rules for forming plurals and highlighting significant examples. It is essential to recap the basic rules, such as adding 's' and 'es', as well as irregular forms, to ensure that students have a clear and consolidated understanding of the content.
Theory Connection
During the class, the connection between theory and practice was established through interactive activities, such as the 'Lost Plural Hunt', 'Plural Builders', and 'Plural Duel'. These exercises allowed students to directly apply the pluralization rules in a fun and dynamic context, solidifying theoretical learning through repeated practice and group discussion.
Closing
Finally, the teacher should emphasize the importance of studying plurals in effective communication in English, both in informal and formal situations. Highlighting how the correct use of the plural can change the meaning of a sentence and how consistent application of the rules aids in the clarity and precision of daily communication reinforces the relevance of the topic to students' everyday lives.
