Objectives

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to provide a clear and detailed understanding of the topic 'MERCOSUL: Characteristics and Members', establishing a solid foundation for discussion and the development of proposed socio-emotional skills. By outlining the objectives, students will be able to focus their attention on the crucial points of the subject, facilitating content assimilation and promoting an environment conducive to collaborative learning.

Main Goals

1. Describe the main characteristics of MERCOSUL and its founding members (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay), as well as the associated countries, such as Chile and Bolivia.

2. Understand the importance of economic and customs integration among MERCOSUL countries for cooperation and regional development.

Introduction

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Mindfulness: Full Attention

The emotional warm-up activity will be a Mindfulness session that will promote focus, presence, and concentration among students. The practice of Mindfulness involves paying full attention to the present moment, helping students to be more aware of their emotions and thoughts, and preparing them mentally for the lesson.

1. Environment Preparation: Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet on the floor and their hands resting in their laps. Ensure that the environment is calm and, if possible, dim the lights to create a tranquil atmosphere. (2 - 3 minutes)

2. Initial Breathing: Instruct students to gently close their eyes and start paying attention to their breathing. Ask them to breathe deeply through their noses, filling their lungs with air, and then exhale slowly through their mouths. Repeat this deep breathing three times. (2 - 3 minutes)

3. Focus on the Present: Guide students to focus their attention on the sensations in their bodies and their natural breathing. Ask them to observe the movement of air in and out of their bodies without trying to control it. (3 - 4 minutes)

4. Exploration of Feelings: Ask students to, while breathing, observe any emotions or thoughts that arise without judging them. Just acknowledge and let them pass, returning focus to the breath. (3 - 4 minutes)

5. Conclusion: Gradually guide students to return their attention to the environment around them. Ask them to slowly open their eyes and do some gentle stretches to finish the practice. (2 - 3 minutes)

Content Contextualization

MERCOSUL, founded in 1991, is an important organization for economic and customs integration among countries in South America. Its creation aimed to promote the free movement of goods, services, and productive factors, as well as to establish a common external tariff and coordinate macroeconomic and sectoral policies among its members. For students, understanding MERCOSUL is not just an issue of learning about politics and economics, but also about developing social awareness regarding the importance of international cooperation and respect for the cultural and economic diversities of member countries.

Studying MERCOSUL also provides an opportunity to develop socio-emotional skills such as responsible decision-making and social skills. By understanding how a country's decisions can impact others, students can reflect on the importance of responsibility and empathy in international relations and in their own lives.

Development

Duration: 60 - 75 minutes

Theoretical Framework

Duration: 30 - 35 minutes

1. MERCOSUL (Southern Common Market): regional organization founded on March 26, 1991, by the Treaty of Asunción, aimed at promoting the free movement of goods, services, and productive factors among its members.

2. Founding Countries: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. These countries signed the Treaty of Asunción, which officially launched the economic bloc.

3. Associated Countries: Chile and Bolivia are considered associated countries with MERCOSUL. This means that, although they are not full members, they participate in cooperation and economic integration agreements with the bloc.

**4. Main Objectives: Promote economic integration among member countries through the elimination of tariff and non-tariff barriers. Establish a Common External Tariff (CET) for trade with non-member countries. Coordinate macroeconomic and sectoral policies among member countries, such as tax, monetary, and exchange rate policies. **

**5. Integration Policies: Free Movement: Facilitation of the movement of goods, services, and productive factors among member countries. Common External Tariff (CET): Harmonization of customs tariffs applied to products imported from outside MERCOSUL. Macroeconomic Policies: Coordination of economic policies to ensure stability and joint economic growth. **

**6. Benefits of Integration: Economic: Increase of intra-regional trade, attraction of foreign investments, expansion of the consumer market. Social: Reduction of regional inequalities, improvement of living conditions, and creation of job opportunities. Political: Strengthening the position of member countries in international negotiations and promoting peace and stability in the region. **

**7. Challenges and Criticisms: Economic Asymmetry: Significant differences in the level of economic development among member countries. Internal Barriers: Persistence of tariff and non-tariff barriers, even within the bloc. Policy Coordination: Difficulties in harmonizing economic and social policies among member countries. **

8. Example of Economic Integration: The creation of a common market where Brazilian products can be sold in Argentina without additional tariffs, and vice versa.

9. Analogy to facilitate understanding: MERCOSUL can be compared to a condominium where residents (member countries) collaborate for the common good, sharing resources and establishing common rules for all.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: 25 - 30 minutes

MERCOSUL Council Simulation

Students will be divided into groups representing the member countries of MERCOSUL (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay) and associated countries (Chile, Bolivia). Each group must discuss and present proposals to solve a fictional economic or political problem affecting the region.

1. Divide the class into six groups, each representing one of the MERCOSUL member or associated countries.

2. Distribute the fictional problem to be solved, such as an economic crisis affecting all MERCOSUL members.

3. Each group must discuss internally and develop a solution proposal, considering the interests and characteristics of their country.

4. Groups should present their proposals to the class, explaining how their solutions would benefit both their own country and the other MERCOSUL members.

5. After the presentations, open a general discussion where students can ask questions and make suggestions about the proposals made by other groups.

Group Discussion

Use the RULER method to guide the group discussion after the presentations. First, Recognize the students' emotions by asking how they felt representing their countries and hearing the proposals from other groups. Next, Understand the causes of those emotions by exploring how the characteristics and issues presented influenced their reactions. Name the identified emotions, helping students accurately label what they felt, such as frustration, empathy, or pride.

Express emotions appropriately, encouraging students to share their reflections respectfully and constructively. Finally, Regulate emotions by discussing strategies for dealing with negative feelings and reinforcing positive ones, both in the context of school activities and in everyday life situations. This practice will help students develop essential socio-emotional skills such as empathy, effective communication, and responsible decision-making.

Conclusion

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

For reflection and emotional regulation, suggest to students that they write a brief paragraph or participate in a group discussion about the challenges faced during the MERCOSUL Council simulation. Ask them to reflect on how they felt representing their countries and hearing the proposals from other groups. Inquire which emotions arose and how they dealt with them. Encourage them to think about what they learned about themselves and their classmates during the activity.

Objective: The objective of this subsection is to encourage self-assessment and emotional regulation, helping students identify effective strategies for dealing with challenging situations. By reflecting on their emotions and actions, students can develop greater self-awareness and learn to regulate their emotions, promoting an environment of respect and cooperation.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

In the closure of the lesson, suggest that students set personal and academic goals related to the content studied. Ask them to write down one personal goal and one academic goal, such as 'understanding better the economic policy of a MERCOSUL country' or 'practicing empathy when debating controversial topics'. Encourage them to share their goals with the class if they feel comfortable.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Understand better the economic policy of a MERCOSUL country.

2. Practice empathy when debating controversial topics.

3. Develop effective communication skills when presenting ideas.

4. Enhance the ability to make responsible decisions considering multiple perspectives.

5. Strengthen social awareness about the importance of international cooperation. Objective: The objective of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy and the practical application of learning, aiming for continuity in academic and personal development. By setting goals, students can direct their future efforts and monitor their own progress, promoting continuous and meaningful learning.
