Objectives

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to introduce students to the basic and essential concepts related to sports that use a net, preparing them for a deeper understanding of the rules and characteristics of each sport. Additionally, this initial stage aims to spark students' interest and curiosity, facilitating a conducive learning environment and socio-emotional development.

Main Goals

1. Identify and describe the different sports that use a net, such as volleyball, tennis, and badminton.

2. Understand the function of the net and the specific rules regarding its use in each sport.

Introduction

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Mindfulness: Preparing the Mind for Learning

Mindfulness practice is a technique that helps increase concentration, presence, and focus by bringing attention to the present moment. This is done through careful observation of one's breath and thoughts, without judgment. The activity helps students emotionally prepare for the class, promoting a calm and receptive mental state.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet firmly planted on the ground and their hands resting on their laps.

2. Explain that they will practice a technique called mindfulness, which involves paying full attention to the present moment.

3. Guide students to close their eyes or focus their gaze on a point ahead.

4. Instruct them to start paying attention to their own breath, feeling the air entering and leaving the body naturally.

5. If their mind begins to wander, gently ask them to redirect their attention back to their breath, without judgment.

6. After about 5 minutes, ask them to bring their attention back to the surrounding environment and, when they are ready, open their eyes.

Content Contextualization

Net sports, such as volleyball, tennis, and badminton, are activities that require not only physical skills but also a high degree of emotional intelligence. The ability to recognize and regulate emotions during the game can be the difference between victory and defeat. For example, a tennis player needs to remain calm after losing a crucial point to focus on the next play. Similarly, a volleyball team must work together, communicating effectively and managing frustrations to achieve success. By understanding the role of emotions in these sports, students will better appreciate the importance of developing socio-emotional skills in their personal and athletic lives.

Development

Duration: 60 - 75 minutes

Theoretical Framework

Duration: 20 - 25 minutes

1. Net Sports: These are sports where a net divides the players or teams. Examples include volleyball, tennis, and badminton.

2. Volleyball: A team sport played by two teams of six players on a court divided by a net. The objective is to make the ball touch the ground on the opponent's side.

3. Tennis: An individual or doubles sport where players use rackets to hit a ball over a net, trying to make the opponent unable to return it.

4. Badminton: A racket sport played individually or in doubles, where players use light rackets to hit a shuttlecock over a net.

5. Function of the Net: The net in net sports serves to divide the field and create an obstacle that players must overcome to score points. It requires precision and control in movements.

6. Characteristics of the Net: In each sport, the net has different heights and characteristics. In volleyball, for example, the net is 2.43m high for men and 2.24m for women. In tennis, the net is 1.07m at the ends and 0.91m at the center. In badminton, the net is 1.55m at the ends and 1.52m at the center.

7. Rules of Net Use: Each sport has specific rules regarding contact with the net. In volleyball, touching the net is a fault. In tennis, the ball may touch the net during a serve, but it must cross it to be valid. In badminton, the shuttlecock must not touch the net during the serve.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: 40 - 50 minutes

🏐 Experiencing Net Sports

In this activity, students will be divided into groups and participate in mini-games of volleyball, tennis, and badminton. Each group will have the opportunity to experience all three sports, practicing the rules and functions of the net. The goal is to promote physical practice while also working on emotional intelligence, such as cooperation, respect for rules, and recognition of emotions during the game.

1. Divide the class into three groups, assigning each group to a sports station: volleyball, tennis, and badminton.

2. Briefly explain the basic rules of each sport and the function of the net.

3. Each group will have 15 minutes to play at their station, following the rules and characteristics of the sport.

4. After 15 minutes, the groups rotate to the next station until everyone has experienced all three sports.

5. During the games, observe and note positive behaviors and areas for improvement related to socio-emotional skills.

Group Discussion

After the activity, gather the students in a circle for a group discussion. Use the RULER method to guide the discussion:

Recognize: Ask students how they felt during the games and if they noticed any specific emotions in themselves or their peers. Understand: Explore the causes of these emotions by discussing specific situations that generated positive or negative feelings.

Name: Encourage students to name the emotions they felt, such as frustration, joy, anxiety, or excitement. Express: Ask how they expressed those emotions during the game and if they believe it was an appropriate way to express them. Regulate: Discuss strategies to regulate intense emotions, such as breathing techniques or assertive communication. Encourage students to share ideas on how they could improve their emotional reactions in future games.

Conclusion

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

Suggest to students that they engage in a written reflection or participate in a group discussion about the challenges faced during the class and how they managed their emotions. For example, ask them to write or discuss about moments when they felt frustration, joy, anxiety, or excitement, and how they responded to those emotions. Encourage them to identify which strategies they used to regulate their emotions, such as deep breathing techniques or communication with peers.

Objective: The objective of this subsection is to encourage students to conduct a self-assessment of their emotions and behaviors during the class. This will help students identify effective strategies for dealing with challenging situations, promoting the development of self-awareness and self-control. Understanding how they managed their emotions will allow students to enhance their socio-emotional skills by applying these strategies in future contexts.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

Explain to students the importance of setting personal and academic goals related to the lesson content. Ask each student to set one or two specific goals, such as improving communication during games, practicing a net sport outside of school, or studying more about the rules and techniques of the sports covered. Encourage them to think about how these goals can contribute to their personal and academic development.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Improve communication and cooperation with peers during games.

2. Regularly practice a net sport outside of school.

3. Study more about the rules and techniques of net sports.

4. Develop strategies to regulate emotions during sports competitions.

5. Participate in school and community sports events. Objective: The objective of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy and the practical application of learning, encouraging them to set clear and achievable goals. This promotes continuity in academic and personal development, helping students apply socio-emotional skills and knowledge gained in various contexts. Setting specific goals also allows students to monitor their progress and celebrate their achievements.
