Lesson Plan | Active Learning | Adjective and Numerals

Keywordsarticles, numerals, grammatical classes, determiners of nouns, text analysis, grammatical correction, interactive activities, collaborative learning, practical contextualization, critical reflection, development of analytical skills
Required Materialsprinted clue maps, envelopes, texts with grammatical errors, computers or tablets (optional), whiteboard or flip chart, markers, note papers

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

This stage of the lesson plan is crucial to ensure that students understand the fundamental concepts about articles and numerals, which are essential for constructing coherent and precise sentences and texts. By focusing on these objectives, students will be able to critically analyze how these grammatical elements influence the meaning of sentences and how they can be used to enhance writing.

Main Objectives:

1. Recognize and differentiate articles and numerals as grammatical classes.

2. Understand and identify the role of articles and numerals as determiners of nouns within a textual context.

3. Apply knowledge about articles and numerals to analyze and improve clarity and precision in written texts.

Side Objectives:

  1. Develop analytical skills in students so that they can identify and correct the improper use of articles and numerals in texts.
  2. Encourage group discussion to promote collective understanding and knowledge sharing on the topic.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The introduction aims to activate the students' prior knowledge and contextualize the importance of articles and numerals in daily language use. By presenting problem situations, students begin to think critically about the topic, while the contextualization helps them perceive the practical relevance of studying these grammatical classes. This stage prepares students for a more conscious and accurate application of concepts in their own writing and text analysis.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Present a sentence with improper use of an article and ask students to correct it, discussing the reason for choosing the correct article.

2. Show a short text where the numerals are replaced by blank lines. Challenge the students to insert the correct numerals based on the context.

Contextualization

Explain how the correct use of articles and numerals not only impacts the clarity of texts but can also completely change the meaning of a sentence, using examples from newspaper headlines or advertising slogans where the choice of an article or numeral made all the difference.

Development

Duration: (70 - 80 minutes)

The development phase is designed for students to practically and interactively apply their prior knowledge of articles and numerals. By participating in these group activities, they not only reinforce individual learning but also collaborate and share knowledge, which strengthens collective understanding and the application of concepts in different contexts. This stage encourages critical thinking and creativity, which are essential for effective management of the Portuguese language.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Grammar Treasure Hunt

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop skills for grammatical analysis and correction in a fun and collaborative context.

- Description: In this playful activity, students will be divided into groups of up to five members and will receive a 'map' with various sentences containing errors in the use of articles and numerals. Each error corrected correctly will lead the group to the next clue until they reach the 'treasure', which is a correctly structured sentence and a brief explanatory text on the importance of the correct use of articles and numerals.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to five students.

  • Give each group an envelope containing the clue map with the sentences.

  • Explain that each clue contains a grammatical error that must be identified and corrected to access the next clue.

  • The first group to reach the 'treasure' with all correct corrections wins a bonus on the next assessment.

Activity 2 - Little Editor

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Enhance the ability to identify and correct grammatical errors, encouraging discussion and justification of linguistic choices.

- Description: Students, organized into groups, will assume the role of editors of a fictitious school newspaper. They will be provided with several short texts containing deliberate errors of articles and numerals. The groups must identify and correct the errors, discussing the reasons for the corrections. At the end, each group will present the corrected text and explain the changes made.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups of five.

  • Distribute the texts with errors among the groups.

  • Students must identify and correct the errors in their texts.

  • Each group will present the corrected text and justify the corrections made.

Activity 3 - The Mystery of Missing Numerals

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Understand the impact of numerals on the construction of meaning in texts and develop contextual interpretation skills.

- Description: This activity turns the classroom into a big detective game. Students, in groups, receive a text where the numerals have been removed and replaced by blanks. They need to use contextual clues to figure out which numerals correctly fill in the blanks, promoting a discussion about the role of numerals in altering the meaning of sentences.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of five.

  • Give the groups the text with blanks where the numerals should be.

  • Provide contextual clues to assist in identifying the correct numerals.

  • Groups will discuss their choices and fill in the blanks.

  • Review the answers with the entire class, discussing the choices.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this section is to allow students to reflect on the learning acquired during the lesson and share their experiences and discoveries with their peers. This discussion will help consolidate knowledge, enabling students to verbalize what they have learned and hear different perspectives. Furthermore, this stage serves for the teacher to assess the overall understanding of the class on the topic and make necessary adjustments in future lessons.

Group Discussion

Encourage a group discussion with all students, inviting them to share their experiences and learnings from the previous activities. Start the discussion with a brief review of the main concepts of articles and numerals. Encourage students to express how understanding these concepts has impacted their ability to analyze and correct texts. Stimulate them to discuss difficulties encountered and strategies used to overcome them.

Key Questions

1. What were the main challenges in applying knowledge about articles and numerals in the activities?

2. How can understanding articles and numerals help improve the clarity and precision of texts?

3. Was there any moment during the activities that changed your perception of the use of articles and numerals in texts?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to ensure that students have understood all the important concepts taught during the lesson and recognize the utility of this information in real and academic contexts. The conclusion serves to reinforce learning, linking theory and practice, and to motivate students to continue applying this knowledge in their future writing and text analysis activities.

Summary

Summarize the main points covered about articles and numerals, highlighting how these grammatical classes serve as determiners of nouns and influence textual clarity and precision. Recall the practical activities carried out and the group discussions that helped consolidate this knowledge.

Theory Connection

Explain how the interactive activities, such as 'Grammar Treasure Hunt' and 'Little Editor', allowed students to theoretically apply what was learned in a practical and contextual manner. Show how these practices reflect the studied theory and the importance of understanding these concepts for analyzing and constructing coherent texts.

Closing

Highlight the relevance of articles and numerals in daily language use, explaining how a deep understanding of these elements can improve writing and reading. Reinforce that mastery of these grammatical classes is crucial not only in academic contexts but also in everyday and professional communications.
