Cartography: Map Reading and Making

Lesson Plan | Active Methodology | Cartography: Map Reading and Making

KeywordsCartography, Map Reading, Map Making, Scales, Legends, Geographic Coordinates, Cartographic Projections, Practical Activities, Teamwork, Critical Thinking, Application of Knowledge, Digital Maps, Geographic Exploration
Necessary MaterialsTreasure maps, Geographic coordinates, Compasses, Mapping instructions, Miniature maps, Components for city models, Blank maps, Pens and pencils, Rulers, Paper, Scissors, Glue

Premises: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class duration, prior student study both with the Book and the beginning of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be carried out during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a large part of the available time.

Objective

Duration: (5 minutes)

This phase of the lesson plan is vital for establishing a solid base of knowledge and skills, empowering learners to explore and apply cartography concepts in both practical and theoretical manners. By setting clear objectives, students will be more equipped for the mapping and reading activities that define this lesson.

Objective Utama:

1. Enable learners to identify and interpret key cartographic elements like scales, legends, coordinates, and projections in various maps.

2. Cultivate practical skills for creating basic maps using fundamental scales and coordinates.

Objective Tambahan:

  1. Encourage critical thinking and careful observation when analysing maps and their representations.
  2. Promote teamwork during hands-on mapping activities.

Introduction

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

The introduction aims to engage learners with the theme of the lesson by presenting problem scenarios that foster critical thinking and the application of previously studied concepts. By contextualising the significance of cartography through relatable examples, students can see the relevance of geography in their lives and the broader world.

Problem-Based Situation

1. Picture this: you find yourself lost on an uncharted island with only a map at hand. How would you use the cartographic elements to make your way out?

2. Consider a scenario where an explorer tries to map a new area using just a compass and a set of geographical coordinates. What hurdles might they face and how could they navigate them?

Contextualization

Cartography is an invaluable tool not only for geographers and explorers but also plays a crucial role in our day-to-day lives—from the use of maps on our smartphones to urban planning and disaster management. Interesting tidbits, like the first world map created by the Greek cartographer Anaximander in the sixth century BC, help us appreciate how far this science has come and its significance.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

The Development stage is crafted to apply learners' existing knowledge of cartography and enhance it further. Through interactive and playful activities, learners will practise concepts such as scales, geographic coordinates, and legends in scenarios mirroring real-world challenges, fostering critical thinking and collaboration. This phase is essential for solidifying theoretical knowledge into hands-on experiences, preparing students for future applications of cartographic skills.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Treasure Map

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Nurture skills in map reading and applying geographic coordinates in a fun and engaging way.

- Description: Students will be split into groups of up to five, with each group receiving a 'treasure map' that contains geographic coordinates of locations within the classroom. The challenge is to read the map and follow the coordinates to uncover hidden 'treasures' at each point. Each successful find will provide a clue to the next, much like a treasure hunt.

- Instructions:

  • Organise the class into groups of no more than five learners.

  • Hand out the treasure maps and instructions to each group.

  • Clarify that every point on the map corresponds to a specific spot in the classroom.

  • Each discovered 'treasure' will lead to the next location on the map.

  • The first group to find all 'treasures' and return to the starting position, accurately following the coordinates, wins.

Activity 2 - City Builders

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Use knowledge of scales and coordinates to construct a model while promoting teamwork and creativity.

- Description: In this group activity, students will design and build a model of a fictional city. They will use maps depicting various terrain types (plains, mountains, rivers) and must correctly position urban elements (houses, schools, parks) in alignment with provided scales and coordinates.

- Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of up to five members.

  • Provide each group with miniature maps representing their fictional city.

  • Learners should apply scales to calculate proportions and accurately place urban features in their model.

  • Each group will present their model, explaining their choices based on the provided maps.

  • Finally, conduct a vote to select the most innovative and well-thought-out model.

Activity 3 - Real Explorers

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Hone practical mapping and coordinate reading skills, encouraging exploration and careful observation of the environment.

- Description: Students, in groups, will step into the shoes of explorers tasked with mapping out an 'unknown land' (a large section of the school). They will receive blank maps, compasses, and instructions for conducting the mapping, including how to create a legend and use geographic coordinates.

- Instructions:

  • Split the class into groups of up to five learners.

  • Provide each group with a blank map, a compass, and a set of mapping instructions.

  • Groups must explore the chosen area, using the compass and guidance to complete their map.

  • Each group should describe the elements mapped in detail and create a legend that explains what each symbol on the map stands for.

  • At the conclusion, each group presents its map and outlines the mapping process.

Feedback

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

This feedback phase is key for cementing learners' understanding, allowing them to contemplate their learning and share their experiences. Group discussions provide a space for students to hear diverse perspectives and methods, enhancing their comprehension. Additionally, the key questions serve as a check on understanding and highlight any remaining knowledge gaps, paving the way for further clarification.

Group Discussion

To kick off the group discussion, the teacher should gather all students and ask each group to share their experiences and insights from the activities. It’s important for the teacher to facilitate this discussion, allowing each group to reflect on how they applied cartography concepts and the challenges they faced. The educator should also motivate students to discuss the various strategies they utilised and the role of collaboration in the success of their activities.

Key Questions

1. What were the main challenges encountered while interpreting the maps and coordinates during the activities?

2. In what ways did the scales and legends aid in navigating and applying the maps?

3. Can you recall any instances where teamwork was vital for completing the task? How does this illustrate the importance of collaboration?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The purpose of this concluding phase is to reinforce and consolidate learners' understanding, ensuring they can effectively relate theoretical concepts to the hands-on activities experienced during the lesson. Moreover, it highlights the relevance and applicability of cartographic knowledge in real life, inspiring students to value and utilise what they learned in varied contexts.

Summary

In wrapping up, the teacher should summarise the key concepts covered in the lesson, underscoring the significance of cartography and how maps serve as vital tools in our everyday lives. It should reiterate the use of scales, legends, coordinates, and projections, illustrating how each element contributes to accurately reading and interpreting maps.

Theory Connection

Throughout the lesson, students gained hands-on experience with the theoretical concepts studied, engaging with maps in challenging and creative scenarios. This integration of theory and practice not only solidified their understanding but also illustrated the practical relevance of cartography in various everyday and professional contexts.

Closing

Finally, it’s important to highlight that the knowledge acquired about cartography extends beyond academia into the real world, influencing everything from navigating with digital maps on smartphones to urban planning and emergency services. Grasping the intricacies of maps and coordinates is a skill that reaches far beyond the classroom.
