Objectives

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

The purpose of this stage of the Socioemotional Lesson Plan is to introduce students to the theme of world dances, emphasizing the importance of self-knowledge and social awareness. By exploring the cultural and artistic diversity of dances, students will be encouraged to recognize and understand their own emotions and those of others, promoting a deeper appreciation of artistic expression and the different cultures around the world.

Main Goals

1. Recognize and appreciate the cultural diversity expressed in dances around the world.

2. Understand dance as a form of artistic expression that uses movement to convey emotions and stories.

Introduction

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Journey to Serenity

The chosen emotional warm-up activity is Guided Meditation. Guided Meditation is a technique that involves leading students through a relaxation and concentration process, using the teacher's voice to guide them. This practice helps to promote focus, presence, and concentration, emotionally preparing students for the lesson.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet flat on the floor and their hands resting on their thighs.

2. Request them to close their eyes and breathe deeply a few times, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.

3. Start guiding the meditation with a calm and soft voice, asking students to imagine a peaceful and safe place, like a deserted beach or a blooming field.

4. Invite students to pay attention to the sensations in their bodies, starting from their feet and slowly moving up to their heads, relaxing each part of their bodies as they progress.

5. Encourage students to focus on their breathing, feeling the air entering and leaving their bodies, and to release any tension or worry they may be feeling.

6. After about 5 minutes, ask students to start slowly moving their fingers and toes, bringing their attention back to the environment around them.

7. Conclude the activity by asking students to slowly open their eyes and take a deep breath to finish.

Content Contextualization

Dances around the world are more than just simple movements; they are rich cultural expressions that carry the stories, traditions, and emotions of different peoples. For example, the Flamenco Dance from Spain is not just a performance, but an intense manifestation of feelings such as passion and suffering, reflecting the soul of the Spanish people. Similarly, African Dance is a celebration of life and community, with movements that express joy, pain, hope, and unity. By exploring these dances, students not only learn about different cultures but also develop the ability to recognize and understand the emotions expressed through movement. This promotes greater empathy and social awareness, essential skills for socioemotional development.

Development

Duration: 60 - 75 minutes

Theoretical Framework

Duration: 20 - 25 minutes

1. Dance as Cultural Expression: Explain that dance is an art form present in all cultures, used to tell stories, celebrate events, and express emotions. Use examples like Flamenco from Spain, which expresses passion and suffering, and African Dance, which celebrates life and community.

2. Diversity of Dances around the World: Detail different types of dances around the world, such as the Indian Bharatanatyam dance, which combines facial expression and detailed body movements, and Irish dance, known for its fast and synchronized steps.

3. Elements of Dance: Present the basic elements of dance: movement, rhythm, space, and expression. Explain how each of these elements contributes to creating a dance performance.

4. History and Evolution of Dances: Provide a brief history of the evolution of dances in different cultures, explaining how they have adapted and changed over time. Use examples like the evolution of Ballet in France and the popularization of Hip Hop in the United States.

5. Socioemotional Importance of Dance: Discuss how dance aids in socioemotional development, promoting self-knowledge, self-control, and social skills. Explain that dancing can be a form of self-therapy, helping people deal with difficult emotions and connect with others.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: 30 - 40 minutes

Exploring World Dances

In this activity, students will explore different world dances through videos and participate in a group discussion about the emotions and stories that each dance conveys. The activity promotes the recognition and understanding of emotions as well as stimulates social awareness and communication skills.

1. Divide the class into small groups and distribute tablets or computers with internet access.

2. Provide a list of videos of dances from different cultures for the groups to watch (for example, Flamenco, Bharatanatyam, Irish Dance, African Dance, Hip Hop).

3. Ask students to watch the videos and note their observations about the movements, rhythms, facial expressions, and emotional expressions of the dancers.

4. After watching the videos, each group should discuss and write down the emotions they believe the dancers are expressing and how these emotions relate to the culture of the presented dance.

5. Each group should prepare a brief presentation to share their observations and reflections with the class.

6. Facilitate a group discussion, encouraging students to share their own emotions while watching the dances and how these experiences can enhance their understanding and empathy towards different cultures.

Group Discussion

To apply the RULER method during the group discussion, start by asking students to recognize the emotions expressed in the dances they watched. Ask them which emotions were most evident and how they were able to identify these emotions in the movements and expressions of the dancers. Next, help students understand the causes and consequences of these emotions by discussing how the culture and history of each dance influence the emotions expressed. Then, encourage students to name the emotions accurately, using precise emotional vocabulary (for example, joy, sadness, passion, hope). Promote the expression of emotions appropriately by asking students to share how they felt while watching the dances and how these emotions can be expressed positively in their own lives. Finally, discuss strategies to regulate emotions, highlighting the importance of self-control and empathy when interacting with different cultures and forms of artistic expression.

Conclusion

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

For the reflection and emotional regulation activity, propose that students write a brief paragraph or engage in a group discussion about the challenges they faced during the exploration of world dances. Ask them to reflect on how they felt watching and discussing the dances, what emotions arose, and how they dealt with these emotions. Encourage them to share strategies they used to maintain self-control and empathy during the activity. The activity can be complemented with a feedback round, where each student can talk about a specific emotion they felt and how they managed it.

Objective: The objective of this subsection is to encourage self-assessment and emotional regulation, helping students identify effective strategies for dealing with challenging situations. By reflecting on their own emotions and those of others, students develop greater emotional awareness and empathy, essential skills for personal and social growth.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

To conclude the lesson, suggest that students set personal and academic goals related to the content covered. Ask them to think about how they can apply what they learned about dances and emotions in their daily lives. For example, they might set a goal to learn more about a specific culture or practice a type of dance as a form of emotional expression. Encourage students to share their goals with the class to create a sense of commitment and mutual support.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Explore more about a specific culture studied in class.

2. Practice a type of dance as a form of emotional expression.

3. Participate in a dance presentation at school or in the community.

4. Reflect weekly on the emotions experienced and how they were managed.

5. Develop a research project on the history of a specific dance. Objective: The objective of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy and the practical application of learning, aiming for continuity in academic and personal development. By setting clear and achievable goals, students feel more motivated to continue exploring the subject and applying the socioemotional skills developed during the lesson.
