The purpose of this stage is to introduce students to the concept of probability in an accessible way, while developing essential socio-emotional skills. Through recognizing and understanding the emotions associated with learning, students will be able to express their perceptions and regulate their emotions during the resolution of mathematical problems.

Main Goals

1. Develop the ability to recognize and name emotions associated with the process of learning probability.

2. Use practical situations with coins, dice, and cards to understand and predict the most likely outcomes.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Guided Deep Breathing

The proposed emotional warm-up activity is Guided Deep Breathing. This practice promotes focus, presence, and concentration among students, helping them to prepare emotionally for the class. The activity involves a series of breathing exercises that help calm the mind and reduce anxiety, promoting a state of relaxation and readiness for learning.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet flat on the ground and hands resting on their laps.

2. Request them to close their eyes or focus on a point ahead if they feel more comfortable that way.

3. Instruct students to inhale deeply through their nose, counting mentally to four.

4. Ask them to hold their breath for a brief moment, counting to two.

5. Guide them to exhale slowly through their mouth, counting mentally to six.

6. Repeat the deep breathing sequence for about five minutes, reminding them to maintain a steady and comfortable rhythm.

7. After the activity is over, ask students to slowly open their eyes and make a brief reflection on how they feel physically and emotionally after the exercise.

Probability is a powerful tool that helps us understand and predict events in our daily lives. For example, when flipping a coin, we can predict that there is a 50% chance of it landing heads or tails. These predictions are fundamental not only in games but also in various situations involving decision-making, such as predicting the weather or assessing risks in different contexts.

Additionally, working with probability gives students the opportunity to develop important socio-emotional skills. By recognizing and understanding the emotions that arise when facing mathematical challenges, such as frustration from an unexpected result or joy from a correct prediction, students learn to express and regulate these emotions, contributing to a healthier and more collaborative learning environment.

2. Definition of Probability: Probability is a measure that quantifies the chance of a certain event occurring. It is expressed as a number between 0 and 1, where 0 indicates an impossible event and 1 indicates a certain event.

3. Examples of Probability: In a coin toss, the probability of landing heads is 0.5 (or 50%), and the probability of landing tails is also 0.5 (or 50%).

4. Random Events: An event is considered random when we cannot predict its outcome with certainty. For example, when rolling a die, we do not know which number will come up, but we can calculate the probability of each number.

5. Sample Space: The sample space is the set of all possible outcomes of an experiment. For example, when rolling a die, the sample space is {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}.

6. Independent and Dependent Events: Events are independent when the outcome of one does not affect the outcome of the other. For example, tossing two coins. Events are dependent when the outcome of one event affects the outcome of another. For example, drawing two cards from a deck without replacement.

7. Calculating Probability: The probability of an event is calculated as the number of favorable outcomes divided by the total number of possible outcomes. For example, the probability of rolling a 3 when throwing a die is 1/6.

8. Analogies and Practical Applications: Use everyday analogies, such as the probability of rain or winning the lottery, to help students relate theory to real-life situations.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: (35 - 40 minutes)

Predictions with Coins, Dice, and Cards

Students will engage in a practical activity to apply probability concepts in real situations. They will flip coins, roll dice, and draw cards from a deck to predict the most likely outcomes and record the collected data.

1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 4 people.

2. Distribute a coin, a die, and a deck of cards to each group.

3. Ask students to flip the coin 20 times and record the results (heads or tails).

4. Then, ask them to roll the die 20 times and record the results (numbers from 1 to 6).

5. Finally, ask them to draw 20 cards from the deck and record the suits (hearts, diamonds, spades, clubs).

6. After the data collection, each group should calculate the probability of each outcome and compare it with the theoretical values (probability of heads or tails, probability of each number on the die, probability of each suit in the deck).

7. Encourage students to reflect on the emotions they felt during the activity, especially regarding their expectations and the results obtained.

Group Discussion
