Objectives

Duration: 10 to 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage of the Socioemotional Lesson Plan is to prepare students for reading and understanding texts in English, promoting the development of necessary socioemotional skills. By recognizing, understanding, naming, expressing, and regulating their emotions, students will be better able to interpret textual information and make informed and responsible decisions about the correct answers.

Main Goals

1. Recognize the information in the text through text interpretation.

2. Develop the ability to identify and express emotions during reading.

3. Apply responsible decision-making when answering questions based on the text.

Introduction

Duration: 15 to 20 minutes

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Guided Meditation for Focus and Concentration

The proposed emotional warm-up activity is Guided Meditation. This practice aims to promote students' focus, presence, and concentration. Guided meditation is a technique where students are instructed to relax and concentrate, following verbal instructions that help them calm their mind and body, preparing them for the lesson.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet flat on the floor and their hands resting in their laps.

2. Instruct them to close their eyes or focus on a point in front of them.

3. Start guiding a series of deep breaths: inhale through the nose counting to four, hold the breath counting to four, and exhale through the mouth counting to four. Repeat this three times.

4. After the deep breaths, ask students to focus on their natural breathing, observing the air coming in and out of their bodies without trying to control it.

5. Guide students to bring their attention to different parts of the body, starting from the head and going down to the feet, relaxing each part as their attention moves.

6. Conclude the meditation by guiding students to slowly open their eyes and bring their attention back to the classroom, ready to start the activity.

Content Contextualization

Reading and understanding texts in English are crucial skills not only for academic success but also for everyday and professional life. For example, being able to understand and interpret a work email or a personally interesting article can significantly impact our daily decisions. Moreover, reading texts in English can open doors to new cultures, ideas, and perspectives, enriching our understanding of the world.

By approaching reading with a socioemotional focus, students will be encouraged to recognize and deal with the emotions that arise during reading, such as frustration when encountering unfamiliar words or satisfaction when understanding a complex paragraph. This process not only improves text comprehension skills but also promotes self-awareness and emotional resilience, essential skills for personal well-being and future success.

Development

Duration: 60 to 75 minutes

Theoretical Framework

Duration: 20 to 25 minutes

1. ### Key Components of Reading and Understanding Texts in English

2. Identification of the Main Topic and Supporting Ideas: Explain that understanding a text begins with identifying the main topic, which is the central idea of the text. Supporting ideas support and expand this main idea. Use examples from short texts to illustrate the difference between the main topic and supporting ideas.

3. Text Structure: Detail how different texts have different structures, such as narratives, descriptions, expositions, and arguments. Provide examples of how to recognize these structures in short texts.

4. Vocabulary and Context: Explain the importance of vocabulary for text comprehension. Teach students to use context clues to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words. Use example sentences containing unfamiliar words and ask students to guess their meaning based on context.

5. Inferences: Discuss how making inferences is an essential part of reading. Inferences are conclusions drawn from implicit information in the text. Use a short text and ask students to make inferences about what is happening or about the characters.

6. Identification of Author's Purpose: Explain that understanding the author's purpose (to inform, entertain, persuade, etc.) helps in text interpretation. Provide examples of different purposes of texts and ask students to identify the purpose in short texts.

7. Recognition of Emotions in Text: Introduce the idea that texts can evoke emotions and that recognizing these emotions can help with comprehension. Use examples of moving texts and discuss the emotions they evoke.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: 25 to 30 minutes

Text Analysis and Discussion

Students will read a short text in English and then participate in a group discussion to analyze the text focusing on emotions and content comprehension.

1. Distribute a copy of the short text in English to each student.

2. Ask students to read the text individually, highlighting any words or phrases that evoke a strong emotion.

3. After reading, divide the class into small groups and ask them to discuss the emotions they felt during reading, as well as their understanding of the text.

4. Instruct each group to choose a representative to share the main emotions and insights of the group with the class.

5. Encourage students to use the RULER method to guide their discussions: recognize the emotions that arose, understand the causes of those emotions, accurately name the emotions, express the emotions appropriately, and discuss ways to regulate those emotions.

Group Discussion

During the group discussion, the teacher should guide students through the RULER method. Start the discussion by asking students to recognize the emotions they felt during reading. Ask them what in the text triggered those emotions and help them understand the causes of those emotions. Then, ask students to name the emotions they felt, using a variety of emotional vocabulary.

Instruct students to express their emotions appropriately by sharing how they felt and why. Finally, discuss ways to regulate those emotions, especially if they were negative emotions, and how this can aid in text comprehension. This feedback should take place in a supportive environment where all students feel comfortable sharing their experiences and learning from each other.

Conclusion

Duration: 20 to 25 minutes

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

Suggest that students write a paragraph about the challenges faced during reading and group discussion, focusing on the emotions they felt and how they managed them. Alternatively, conduct a group discussion where each student can share their experiences and emotional regulation strategies. Encourage honesty and deep reflection on the coping mechanisms used and how those mechanisms aided or hindered text comprehension.

Objective: The objective of this activity is to encourage self-assessment and emotional regulation, helping students identify effective strategies to deal with challenging situations. This promotes self-awareness and self-control, allowing students to recognize their emotions and learn to regulate them effectively in future contexts, both academic and personal.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

Explain to students the importance of setting personal and academic goals related to the content of the lesson. Ask each student to write down one personal goal and one academic goal they want to achieve, based on what they learned about reading and text comprehension and the socioemotional skills developed during the lesson. Discuss in groups the different goals and how each student plans to achieve them.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Improve the ability to identify the main topic of texts in English.

2. Enhance vocabulary in English using contextualization techniques.

3. Develop the ability to make inferences based on English texts.

4. Strengthen the ability to recognize and regulate emotions during reading.

5. Increase participation in group discussions by expressing emotions appropriately. Objective: The aim of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy and the practical application of learning, aiming for continuity in academic and personal development. By setting clear goals, students become more aware of their objectives and the necessary steps to achieve them, promoting a proactive and autonomous approach to learning.
