Objectives

The purpose of this stage of the Socio-emotional Lesson Plan is to establish a solid foundation for understanding the concepts of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, while integrating socio-emotional skills such as self-awareness and responsible decision-making. By recognizing and correctly naming the phases of mixtures, students will be able to apply these concepts practically and consciously, developing a deeper and more emotionally intelligent understanding of the content.

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Deep Breathing and Mindfulness

The emotional warm-up activity is called 'Deep Breathing and Mindfulness'. This practice involves conscious breathing techniques and mindfulness, helping students focus on the present moment, calm their minds, and prepare emotionally for the lesson. Deep breathing and mindfulness are effective tools for reducing anxiety and enhancing concentration, promoting a calm and receptive learning environment.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet on the floor and their hands resting on their thighs.

2. Ask them to close their eyes or, if they prefer, keep their eyes partially open, focusing on a fixed point in front of them.

3. Guide the students to breathe deeply through their nose, counting to four, filling their lungs with air.

4. Ask them to hold their breath for two seconds.

5. Instruct the students to exhale slowly through their mouth, counting to six, releasing all the air from their lungs.

6. Repeat this deep breathing cycle five times.

7. After the breaths, guide the students in a brief mindfulness exercise, asking them to focus their attention on the sensations in their bodies, the sounds around them, and their breathing.

8. Encourage the students to notice any thoughts that come to mind, without judging them, just observing them and letting them go.

9. After a few minutes of mindfulness, ask the students to gradually open their eyes and return their attention to the classroom.

Mixtures are present in many aspects of our daily lives, from the food we eat to the cleaning products we use. For example, think of lemonade with sugar. When well mixed, the juice appears to be a single liquid phase—a homogeneous mixture. However, if we add ice, we can clearly see two phases: the liquid and the solid, characterizing a heterogeneous mixture. Understanding these concepts is not only fundamental for science but also for making responsible decisions in our routine. Being able to identify and count the phases of mixtures can help in various contexts, such as food preparation or conducting scientific experiments with greater accuracy.

1. Definition of Mixture: A mixture is formed by the combination of two or more substances, each retaining its individual properties.

2. Homogeneous Mixture: It is a mixture where the components cannot be distinguished with the naked eye, forming a single phase. Examples include solutions like saltwater and air.

3. Heterogeneous Mixture: It is a mixture where the components can be visually distinguished, forming two or more phases. Examples include water and oil, granite, and sand with iron.

4. Phases of Mixtures: Phases are the visible and distinct parts in a heterogeneous mixture. Each phase has different properties and can be separated by physical methods.

5. Practical Examples: Homogeneous mixture: Sugar dissolved in water (the sugar cannot be seen separate from the water). Heterogeneous mixture: Water and oil (we can see two distinct phases).

6. Analogies to Facilitate Understanding: Imagine a glass of orange juice with ice. The orange juice without ice is a homogeneous mixture. When we add ice, the mixture becomes heterogeneous as we can see the liquid and the solid separately.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: (35 to 40 minutes)

Identifying and Classifying Mixtures

In this practical activity, students will observe different types of mixtures and determine whether they are homogeneous or heterogeneous, as well as count the number of visible phases. They will then discuss their observations and relate them to the emotions perceived during the activity.

1. Divide the class into small groups of 3 to 4 students.

2. Provide each group with samples of different mixtures (for example, saltwater, water with sand, milk, orange juice with pulp, among others).

3. Ask students to observe each sample and note their observations in a table, classifying the mixtures as homogeneous or heterogeneous and counting the number of visible phases.

4. Instruct the students to discuss their observations in their groups and come to a consensus regarding the classification of each mixture.

5. Ask the groups to present their conclusions to the class, explaining how they reached them.

6. During the presentation, encourage students to express how they felt while doing the activity, emphasizing the importance of communication and teamwork.

Group Discussion

After the presentations, lead a group discussion using the RULER method to guide the socio-emotional feedback. Start by asking students to recognize the emotions they felt during the activity and while listening to their peers' presentations. Ask: 'How did you feel while observing the mixtures and discussing as a team? Were there moments of frustration or satisfaction?'.

Next, help students understand the causes and consequences of those emotions. Ask: 'Why do you think you felt that way? How did those emotions influence the way you worked in your group?'. Encourage students to name their emotions correctly, using appropriate vocabulary.

Then, discuss the appropriate expression of those emotions. Ask: 'How did you express your emotions during the activity? Was there a situation where expressing emotions helped or hindered teamwork?'. Finally, help students reflect on how to regulate those emotions effectively. Ask: 'What could you do to better manage your emotions in future activities?'.

Conclusion

Duration: (15 to 20 minutes)

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

Suggest that students write a paragraph reflecting on the challenges they faced during the lesson and how they managed their emotions. Alternatively, conduct a group discussion where each student can share their experiences. Guiding questions may include: 'What was the biggest challenge you encountered during the activity?' and 'How did you deal with the emotions that arose during this challenge?'.

Objective: The objective of this subsection is to encourage students to practice self-assessment and emotional regulation. By reflecting on the challenges faced and how they managed their emotions, students can identify effective strategies for dealing with challenging situations in the future, promoting a more conscious and balanced emotional development.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

Explain to students the importance of setting personal and academic goals related to the content of the lesson. Ask them to write one or two specific goals they wish to achieve. For example, a personal goal may be 'Practice deep breathing when I feel frustrated', while an academic goal may be 'Successfully identify and classify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures at home.'
