Objectives

Pre-lesson

Before diving into the lesson, it's important for students to refresh their understanding of parts of speech. Start by assigning Chapter 1, 'Introduction to Parts of Speech,' from 'The Art of Words: Articles and Adjectives in Text Construction.' This reading covers the definition of parts of speech, introduces the eight major parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, interjection), provides examples of each in sentences, and highlights the importance of correct usage.

Next, have students review the 'Fraction Vocabulary for 4th Graders' list. While it's designed for a younger grade, it offers a solid refresher on basic vocabulary related to grammar and sentence structure. Focusing on these terms will help students feel confident and prepared to engage with more complex concepts during the lesson. This pre-lesson work ensures everyone has a foundational understanding, setting the stage for a more productive and engaging class.
