Contextualization

Visual Arts are present in almost every moment of our lives. When we watch a movie, when we look at a building, when we read an illustrated book, or even when we surf the internet, we are in contact with different forms of Visual Arts. Therefore, learning about them helps us better understand the world around us.

Moreover, making art is a lot of fun! 🎉 When we make art, we can use our imagination, express our feelings, and communicate our ideas in a creative way. And you know what the best part is? There is no right or wrong way to make art. Each of us is unique, and therefore, the art we create is also unique.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'My Self-Portrait and My Story'

Project Objective

The objective is to create a self-portrait using painting and drawing techniques to explore the expression of feelings and personalities. Each self-portrait will be accompanied by a short story narrated by the students, explaining the choices of colors, shapes, and elements in their art.

Detailed Project Description

This project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students. Each student will be responsible for creating their own self-portrait, as well as contributing to the stories of their groupmates. The project will be divided into three parts: Drawing, Painting, and Narration.

In the first part, students will draw the outline of their faces and the main elements, such as eyes, mouth, nose, and hair.

In the second part, they will paint their drawings, using colors that reflect their personality and emotions.

In the third and final part, students will narrate a short story about their self-portrait, explaining the choices of colors and shapes used and what they represent. Groupmates will help in building each other's stories.

The completion time for this project is one month.

Required Materials

• A3 paper
• Drawing pencil
• Eraser
• Colored pens
• Various colored paints
• Brushes of different sizes
• Water and container to clean the brushes
• Old newspapers or cloths to cover the work area

Detailed Step-by-Step

Part 1: Drawing

1. Draw the outline of your face on the A3 paper. You can use a mirror or a photo to help.
2. Add facial elements like eyes, mouth, nose, and hair. Remember, it doesn't have to be perfect, it's your art!

Part 2: Painting

1. Choose the colors that will represent you in your self-portrait. Think about how you feel, what are your favorite things, what makes you happy or sad.
2. Use the paints to fill in the drawing. You can paint the hair one color, the eyes another. Use your creativity!
3. Let the painting dry.

Part 3: Narration

1. Think about the choices you made during the painting. Why did you choose that color for the hair? And for the eyes? What do they represent to you?
2. Write a short story about your self-portrait. Tell your groupmates about your choices and what they mean.
3. With the help of your groupmates, refine your story and practice presenting it.

After finishing your self-portrait and your story, you will share them with the class in a presentation. This will be a lot of fun, and we will all learn a lot about art and each other!
