Maps and Living Places

Contextualization

Hello, little explorers! Have you ever stopped to think about how big our world is and how full of amazing places it is? Each place has its importance and uniqueness, and that's why maps exist. They help us to better understand our planet Earth.

Maps are drawings or representations on paper, stone, wood, metal, fabric, plastic, or any other material, which show the surface of the planet or part of it. They help us to locate ourselves, to know where the places are and how to get to them.

Introduction

Today, we are going to talk about "Maps and Places of Living". But what does that mean? Well, "Places of Living" refer to the places where we live, such as our home, school, park, supermarket, among others. These places are very important to us, as this is where we spend most of our time.

Maps, in turn, help us to understand how these places of living relate to each other and to the rest of the world. They show us the roads and paths that connect one place to another, the rivers, mountains, seas, and oceans that surround the lands, and much more.

In addition, maps also help us to understand how people use and transform the space in which they live. For example, on a map, we can see how cities are formed, how roads are built, where parks, schools, hospitals, and so on are located.

Maps are very important because they help us to know our world better. They allow us to travel without leaving home, explore unknown places, and even plan our trips. Therefore, it is very cool to learn about maps and places of living.

Shall we embark on this journey of discovery and learning together?

Practical Activity

Title: "The Map of Our Little World"

Project Objective

The goal of this project is for you, little explorers, to create the "Map of Our Little World", where you will represent the Places of Living of you. With this, you will develop skills such as teamwork, communication, time management, problem solving, and, of course, a deeper knowledge about the world around you!

Project Description

In groups of 3 to 5 students, you will create, draw and color a map that represents your places of living. You will learn to locate yourself, to identify the places and the routes that connect these places.

Required Materials

  • Large paper (cardboard, brown paper or craft paper)
  • Colored pencils, markers, crayons
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Magazines (to cut out images, if you prefer)

Step by Step

  1. Planning: Together with your group, make a list of the places of living that you want to put on the map. It can be your home, school, park, a friend's house, ice cream shop, etc.

  2. Research and Discussion: Now, talk to your classmates and see if everyone agrees with the places chosen. Remember, the places of living must be from everyone in the group.

  3. Drawing the Map: Get the large paper and start drawing your map. Remember to draw the places of living chosen by the group. Use the ruler to make the straight lines and try to make the drawings as close to reality as possible.

  4. Coloring: Once the drawing is ready, it's time to color! Use your creativity and make your map very beautiful.

  5. Legends and Directions: Now, it is important to put the legends in the places of living and also the directions that connect one place to another. For example, if the school is close to your home, draw an arrow that connects the two places and write "home - school" next to it.

  6. Presentation: Finally, each group will present its map to the class. Tell a little bit about the places of living that you chose and how they are connected on the map.

Remember, practice makes perfect. Don't worry if your first map is not perfect. The important thing is to have fun, learn and work as a team. Good luck, explorers!
