Games and Toys in Different Eras

Contextualization

Hello, little historians! Are you ready to embark on a journey through time? Our destination is the past, more precisely, in different historical periods. And our vehicle? Games and play! Yes, that's right, we will explore how people had fun throughout the centuries and how these games and play reflect the society and culture of each period.

Games and play are much more than simple pastimes. They go beyond, helping us understand how people lived, how they related to each other, what their values and beliefs were. Each game and play has an interesting story behind it, and by unraveling these stories, we can discover a lot about humanity and its evolution.

Introduction

Throughout history, there have been many changes in the way people had fun. While some games and play have withstood the test of time, others have been forgotten or replaced by new ones. But why? The answer to this question leads us to concepts such as culture, technology, geography, and even politics.

In this project, we will explore games and play in three distinct periods: Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Modern Era. Each of these periods had its own unique characteristics, and this was reflected in the games and play that people practiced. Let's discover together how these activities were carried out, what their rules were, and what they tell us about the society of the time.

But don't worry, we are not going alone on this journey. You will be in groups, forming teams of explorers. Together, you will research, create, and present your findings. And most importantly: you will have fun while you learn! So, grab your backpacks, prepare your curious minds, and embark on this adventure through time!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Games and Play: Our Time Machine"

Project Objective

This project aims to provide students with a practical and fun learning experience about history through games and play. With this, students will develop research, collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and time management skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will be responsible for researching, creating, and presenting a typical game or play from each of the three periods: Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Modern Era. They will operate an imaginary "time machine," delving into each period and bringing back a game or play to share with the class.

Each group will present the historical context of the game or play, the rules, and explain why this activity was important or popular at that time. In addition, students will compare the activities, identifying similarities and differences between them and discussing what this reveals about the evolution of society over time.

Required Materials

  • History textbooks
  • Internet access for research
  • Materials for creating the games/play (paper, cardboard, colored pencils, scissors, glue, recyclable objects, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Group Formation: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will choose a name for their team and elect a "time leader," who will be responsible for managing time and ensuring that all steps are completed.

  2. Research: Each group should research typical games and play from one of the three periods: Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Modern Era. They should find out how these games were played, what the rules were, and why they were popular at that time.

  3. Creation of the Game/Play: Based on the research, students should create a version of the game or play they chose. They can adapt the rules or materials if necessary, but they must maintain the essence of the activity.

  4. Presentation Preparation: In addition to creating the game or play, students must prepare a presentation to share their findings with the class. They should explain the historical context, the rules of the game/play, and discuss the similarities and differences between the activities of the three periods.

  5. Project Presentation: Each group will have time to present their game/play and share their findings. At the end of each presentation, other students can participate in the game/play and ask questions to the time explorers.

  6. Schoolyard Revitalization: At the end of the project, students will revitalize a space in the schoolyard so they can play their creations during recess. They should create instructions for the game/play, ensuring that everyone can participate and have fun.

  7. Final Evaluation: Students will be evaluated not only for the presentation and the game/play they created but also for teamwork, participation in classroom discussions, and contribution to the schoolyard revitalization.

This journey through time will be a transformative experience, allowing our little explorers to become historians for a while, discovering the past and reflecting on the present. Bon voyage!

Delivery Format: Each group must submit a report containing the researched information, the rules of the game/play created, and a detailed description of the creation process. In addition, students should record the presentation made to the class in a short video (3 to 5 minutes). The report and video should be submitted to the teacher.
