Hello, young historians! Have you ever stopped to think about how important families are in society? They are the foundation of everything, the first institution we know. Family is where we learn our first lessons, where we build our first bonds of love, and where, often, we discover the stories of our ancestors.
Throughout all times, families have always been a fundamental pillar of society, and this is no different in History. In fact, we can say that families are like small windows through which we can see how societies were in the past. They tell us about customs, traditions, beliefs, and how people lived at that time.
Introduction
Today, we are going to embark on a journey through time to discover what family life was like in different periods of history. We will explore from the time of the first humans, through ancient Egypt and Greece, until we reach the Middle Ages. We will learn a little about the houses, clothes, food, games and activities, and of course, about family life in each of these eras.
And to make this journey even more special, our project will be divided into groups so that we can share our discoveries and learn together. Each group will focus on a period of history, and in the end, we will all present our findings to the class.
Remember, the main goal is not only to learn about history, but also to understand the importance of family and how it helps us become who we are. So, let's go, time adventurers, our journey is just beginning!
Practical Activity
Activity Title: 'Traveling Through Time with Family'
Project Objective:
- Study and understand what family life was like in different periods of history, encouraging research, collaboration, and presentation of results.
- Develop socio-emotional skills such as communication, collaboration, problem-solving, planning, and time management.
Detailed Project Description:
Each group of 3 to 5 students will become 'experts' in a period of history (early humans, ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and the Middle Ages) and will research what family life was like at that time. You will discover about customs, traditions, food, housing, and family activities.
After the research, each group will create a 'Family Time Mural'. This will be a visual panel representing family life in their respective historical period. The mural should be made with art materials such as cardboard, crayons, paint, glue, scissors, magazines, etc.
Finally, each group will present their Family Time Mural to the class, explaining what they learned during the research, how they worked together to create the mural, and what they found most interesting about family life in their historical period.
Materials Needed:
- History books (or reliable sources on the internet)
- Large cardboard or poster board
- Art materials (crayons, paint, brushes, glue, scissors, magazines, etc.)
- Colored pens
- Paper and pencils for notes
Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:
- The teacher will form groups of 3 to 5 students and assign a historical period to each group.
- Each group should research family life in their respective period. They should look for information about food, housing, clothing, games and activities, household chores, beliefs, and family values.
- After the research, they should discuss as a group and choose the most important and interesting information to include in the Family Time Mural.
- With all art materials, each group should create their Family Time Mural, visually representing family life in their historical period.
- Upon finishing the mural, they should write short explanatory texts about each element represented, like captions in a history book.
- Lastly, each group should prepare a presentation for the class, where they will share what they learned during the research, how they worked as a team to create the mural, and what they found most interesting about family life in their historical period.
