Composition and Decomposition of Natural Numbers Less than 100

Context

Introduction

In mathematics, a fundamental skill is to understand how numbers work and how we can manipulate them. The concept of composition refers to how a number is formed by other smaller numbers, while decomposition is the opposite, how a number can be divided into smaller parts.

In our case, we will focus on natural numbers less than 100. This means that we will study how numbers from 1 to 99 can be formed by smaller parts, such as, for example, the number 37 is formed by the digits 30 and 7.

Importance

Understanding the composition and decomposition of numbers is essential for the study of many mathematical concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In addition, these skills are very applicable in everyday situations. For example, when we go to the supermarket, we need to compose the total value of purchases with the individual prices of each item.

Furthermore, composition and decomposition are crucial concepts for understanding more advanced mathematical concepts, such as fractions and decimal numbers. Therefore, it is very important that all of us have a good command of these skills.

Finally, this project also aims to develop students' socio-emotional skills, such as the ability to work in a team, communication, problem-solving, and creativity. These skills are essential for the integral formation of each student and for success in all areas of life.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Unveiling the Numbers"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore the composition and decomposition of natural numbers less than 100, through a practical and playful activity. In addition, the project aims to develop important socio-emotional skills, such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and creativity.

Detailed Project Description

In this activity, students will form groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be responsible for creating a "numbers puzzle." Each piece of the puzzle will be a number from 1 to 99, and the students will have to figure out how these pieces fit together to form all the numbers.

Furthermore, each group will have to make a presentation to the class explaining how their puzzle works. They will have to show how the pieces form the numbers and how the numbers can be decomposed into their parts.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or cardstock
  • Colored pencils, markers, and/or crayons
  • Blunt scissors
  • Glue
  • Old magazines for cutting (optional)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Students should be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will receive a box with the necessary materials.

  2. Creating the Numbers: Each group must create the puzzle pieces, which will be the numbers from 1 to 99. They can draw the numbers, cut them from magazines, or print them, as long as each number is visible and not too small.

  3. Composition and Decomposition of Numbers: Students must figure out how these pieces fit together to form all the numbers from 1 to 99. They must also figure out how each number can be decomposed into its parts.

  4. Assembling the Puzzle: After figuring out how the pieces fit together, students must glue them on the cardboard or cardstock, forming a giant puzzle. They can use different colors to facilitate the visualization of the parts.

  5. Preparing the Presentation: Each group must prepare a presentation for the class, explaining how the puzzle works. They must show how the pieces form the numbers and how the numbers can be decomposed into their parts.

  6. Presentation to the Class: Each group will present their puzzle to the class. They must answer their classmates' questions and explain any doubts that may arise.

At the end of the project, students will not only have a better understanding of the composition and decomposition of numbers but will also have developed important skills in teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and creativity.

Delivery Format

The delivery format will be the presentation of the puzzle to the class and an explanation of how it works. In addition, students must submit a list with all numbers from 1 to 99 and how they were composed and decomposed in the puzzle.
