More and more, written communication has become indispensable in our daily lives. From sending a text message to a friend to writing an email to a teacher, the ability to compose effective texts is crucial. Therefore, it is very important that we learn from an early age the correct way to express our ideas in writing.

Now, you might be thinking: 'But what is a text?' Well, a text is much more than just a set of words. A text is a sequence of ideas that interconnect and, together, make sense. And to compose a good text, we need to understand some fundamental concepts, such as paragraph, sentence, punctuation, and cohesion.

Introduction

What is a paragraph?

Have you noticed that when we are writing, we usually divide our text into parts? Each of these parts is called a paragraph. A paragraph is a unit of text that generally expresses a complete idea or a part of it.

What is a sentence?

The sentence is the smallest unit of meaning we can write. It needs to have at least a subject (who or what performs the action) and a predicate (what is said about the subject).

What is punctuation?

Punctuation is a set of graphic signs that we use to give meaning and fluency to the text. Some examples of punctuation marks are the period, comma, question mark, and exclamation point.

What is cohesion?

Cohesion is the way the parts of a text relate to each other. It is built through the use of words and expressions that connect ideas, such as connectors (and, but, however, then, etc.) and pronouns (he, she, it, etc.).

Now that you know a little more about the components of a text, how about deepening our knowledge and getting our hands dirty? In our project, we will explore these concepts in a practical and fun way, creating our own texts!

Practical Activity: 'The Book of Paragraphs'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to collaboratively understand and apply the concepts of paragraph, sentence, punctuation, and cohesion in practice, while exercising socio-emotional skills such as communication, problem-solving, time management, and creative thinking.

Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will create a 'Book of Paragraphs.' Each group will be responsible for writing a story, divided into paragraphs, and illustrating it. This story should contain different types of sentences, correct punctuation, and cohesion between the paragraphs.

Necessary Materials

• A4 paper or cardboard for making the book
• Pencils and erasers
• Colored pens, crayons, or colored pencils
• Children's books for research (optional)

Step by Step

1. Group Formation: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will receive the necessary materials for the activity.

2. Choosing the Theme of the Story: The group must choose a theme for the story they will write. It can be an adventure, a funny story, a fairy tale... imagination is the limit!

3. Paragraph Division: After choosing the theme, students will divide the story into paragraphs. Each paragraph should express a complete idea or a part of the story.

4. Writing and Revising Paragraphs: Now, it's time to write! The group should write the paragraphs of the story, remembering to use complete sentences, correct punctuation, and to create cohesion between the paragraphs.

5. Illustrating the Story: While some students write, others can start drawing the images that will illustrate the story. Remember, each paragraph should have at least one illustration.

6. Assembling the Book: After finishing the writing and illustrations, it's time to assemble the 'Book of Paragraphs.' Students must organize the paragraphs and illustrations in the correct sequence, as if it were a real book.

7. Presentation of the Book: Finally, each group will present the 'Book of Paragraphs' to the class, reading the story aloud and explaining why they chose each paragraph and illustration.

Delivery Format

The 'Books of Paragraphs' should be delivered to the teacher, who will evaluate the correctness of the use of the concepts of paragraph, sentence, punctuation, and cohesion, as well as the quality of the illustrations and the creativity of the story. In addition, each student should do a self-assessment, reflecting on their participation in the project and the socio-emotional skills they developed.
