Introduction
Hello, everyone! Are you ready for an incredible journey through time and space in our community? In this project, we will immerse ourselves in the world of Geography and learn about our community, how it was formed, how it developed, and what our role is in this context.
A community is the place where we live, where we find our friends, our neighbors, our leisure and learning. It is formed by people, places, and stories. To better understand our community, we need to know two fundamental concepts: time and space.
Time is what makes us perceive the passing of days, weeks, months, and years. It is what helps us understand the history of our community, what it was like in the past, what it is like in the present, and what it could be like in the future. Space is the place where all this happens. It is our home, our neighborhood, our city. It is what gives our community shape and context.
Contextualization
Now, you may be wondering, "Why is it important to understand time and space in our community?". The answer is simple: because it helps us understand who we are, where we came from, and where we are going.
When we know the history of our community, we better understand why things are the way they are. For example, why is the square in our city so beautiful and well cared for? Because many people, over time, came together to make it this way. Or why does our school have this name? Because it honors someone who made something important for our community.
And when we understand the space of our community, we can think about how we can improve it. For example, if we realize that our neighborhood lacks a playground, we can unite and propose this idea to the responsible people. Thus, we learn that we are an active part of our community and that we can make a difference in it.
So, are you ready for this incredible challenge? Let's go!
Activity: "Exploring Our Community Through Time and Space"
Objectives:
- Understand the concept of time and space in the formation and development of a community.
- Develop research, communication, collaboration, and time management skills.
Activity Description:
In this project, you will be time and space detectives! Your mission will be to research, investigate and discover about the history and characteristics of our community. You will create an interactive map and a timeline that will show what you have learned. In addition, you will interview the oldest residents and write a short text telling an interesting story about our community.
Required Materials:
- Cardboard or poster paper
- Colored pens
- Pencil and eraser
- Ruler
- Safety scissors
- Glue
- Computer with Internet access (for research)
- Camera or cell phone (for the interview, with parents' permission)
Step by Step:
-
Groups formation: The students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for one part of the research.
-
Research: Each group should research a period in the history of our community, for example: the foundation, the first families, the first businesses, the changes over time, etc. Take note of everything you find out.
-
Interactive Map: Using the cardboard or poster paper, the students should draw a map of our community. Mark on it the important places and the changes that have occurred over time. Use the colored pens to make the map beautiful and easy to understand.
-
Timeline: With the information they have gathered, the students should create a timeline. On it, they will mark the main events in our community over time. Remember to include dates and illustrations to aid comprehension.
-
Interview: Each group should interview an older resident of our community. Ask about what the community was like in the past, what changes have taken place, what the traditions are, etc. Remember to write down the answers.
-
Community History: With the information from the interview, each group should write a short story about our community. Be creative!
-
Presentation: At the end, each group should present to the class what they discovered. Show the map, the timeline, tell the story you wrote, and talk about the interview.
Remember, collaboration and respect among group members are very important. And above all, have fun exploring the time and space of our community!
Delivery Format: The project will be delivered to the teacher in two parts: an oral presentation of the work in the classroom, and the delivery of the physical materials (map, timeline and community history) to the teacher, who will evaluate the project.
