Hello, little mathematicians! Let's embark on a great adventure of exploration and discovery of the world of events and their classifications! Have you ever stopped to think that mathematics is present in everything around us? Yes, even in events, which are things that happen in a planned or unexpected way!

In mathematics, we classify events according to the probability of them occurring. And what is probability? Probability is the chance of an event happening, it's like a prediction of what might happen. It is always expressed by a number between 0 and 1. If an event has a probability of 0, it means it is impossible to happen. On the other hand, if the probability is 1, it is certain to happen.

Introduction

To better understand, let's start with simple events. Simple events are those that either happen or do not happen. For example, flipping a coin and observing if it landed heads or tails. This is a simple event because there are only two possibilities: it lands heads or it lands tails.

Next, we have compound events. They are formed by two or more simple events. For example, rolling a die and observing if the number that came up is even and greater than 3. This is a compound event because it involves two events: the number that came up is even, and the number that came up is greater than 3.

The Importance of Event Classification

Event classification is very important because it helps us better understand the situations in our daily lives. For example, if you know that the chance of rain today is 80%, you can prepare by taking an umbrella to school. If the chance of rain were 0%, you wouldn't need to take the umbrella.

Furthermore, event classification also helps us make decisions. For example, if you know that the chance of winning a soccer game is 90%, you will probably feel more confident and motivated to play, right?

Practical Activity: "Event Hunters"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to allow students, through a playful activity, to understand important mathematical concepts such as simple and compound events, and the classification of events according to the probability of occurrence. In addition, the project aims to promote socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and communication.

Project Description

In this activity, students will be "event hunters" and will have to identify and classify simple and compound events in everyday situations. Each group of students will receive a kit of materials that will include cards with events, a classification board, and a record book.

Necessary Materials

  • Cards with simple and compound events
  • Classification board
  • Record book
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Kit with various objects (e.g. coins, dice, cards, balls, etc.)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will have a kit of materials.

  2. Reading and Discussion: Students should read and discuss the concepts of simple and compound events, as well as the classification of events according to probability. The teacher should be available to clarify doubts and guide the discussion.

  3. Kit Preparation: Each group should prepare their kit of materials, organizing the cards with events and the classification board.

  4. Event Hunt: The groups will go "hunting" events in the school environment or at home. They must identify at least 10 events, recording each one in the record book.

  5. Event Classification: Back in the classroom, the groups will classify the events they found. They must identify if they are simple or compound events and what is the probability of each one happening.

  7. Final Discussion: After all presentations, the teacher will lead a final discussion with the class, reinforcing the concepts presented and addressing possible doubts.
