Welcome, future mathematicians! Today we are embarking on an incredible journey into the world of Sequences and Patterns in Mathematics. We will understand the basic principles that guided great mathematicians and discoverers from all over the world and apply these same rules to everyday problems.

A sequence is a list of numbers or objects that follow a certain rule - the pattern. Examples of famous sequences in mathematics include the Fibonacci Sequence, in which each number is the sum of the two preceding ones, and the sequence of even numbers, where each number is twice the previous one. A deep understanding of sequences and patterns is essential for mathematics and for many other disciplines, including computer science, physics, and engineering.

Patterns, on the other hand, are regularities or rules that make it possible to predict the next elements or situations. For example, the "day and night" pattern that repeats itself or the four seasons of the year. Being able to identify patterns allows us to predict and prepare for future situations.

Mathematics is in our daily life. When dividing a cake into equal parts, when saving money to buy something or when understanding the sequence of days, weeks and months in a year, we are using mathematical concepts. And in several careers, such as engineering, economics, physics, computer science, mathematics is essential.

Deciphering sequences and patterns is what makes it possible, for example, to analyze the progression of a disease in a population, to predict economic movements or to develop computer algorithms. The ability to identify and understand patterns is essential for everyday life and for a future career, in various fields of study.

Therefore, learning and understanding sequences and patterns is not only a valuable skill, but also an important tool for finding solutions in real life.

Hands-on Activity: "Patterns in Art and Nature"

Project Objective

This project aims to deepen students' knowledge about sequences and patterns through a fun and engaging activity that involves creating a piece of mathematical art. In addition, the project seeks to develop important socio-emotional skills, such as teamwork, planning, and time management.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will investigate and identify patterns in an art object or in nature, and then create a piece of art based on that pattern. It can be a painting, a drawing, a sculpture, or any other form of art. The only condition is that the art must reflect the identified pattern.

Required Materials

  • Materials for creating the artwork (paints, brushes, pencils, clay, etc.)
  • Camera or cell phone to take a picture of the art object or nature
  • Paper and pencil for notes and sketches

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions for the Activity

  1. Research and Choosing an Art Object or Nature: Each group should search for and select an art object or nature that presents some type of sequence or pattern. It can be a painting, a sculpture, a building, a plant, an animal...

  2. Identification of the Pattern: Students must identify and record the pattern found in the selected object. They should ask themselves: what is the sequence formed? How does it progress?

  3. Creating the Artwork: Based on the identified pattern, students should create their own artwork that reflects this pattern.

  4. Written Document: At the end of the practical part of the project, students should write a document reporting in the format of a report containing the following topics:

    • Introduction: The student should contextualize the theme, explain the relevance of the concept of sequences and patterns in mathematics and in real life, and explain the objective of the project.
    • Development: Here, students should explain the theory of sequences and patterns, explain the activity in detail, and indicate the methodology used. They should also discuss the identified pattern and the artwork created. Photos of the artwork, sketches, and notes made during the activity can be included.
    • Conclusions: Students should reflect on the experience, review the main points, and present the lessons learned. They should also discuss the conclusions about the knowledge and use of the pattern.
    • Bibliography: Here, students should indicate the sources on which they relied to work on the project.

Project Deliverables

The project will have two main deliverables: the Artwork and the Report. The artwork will be the physical representation of the identified pattern and the report will be the written record of the entire process of carrying out the project. In the report, the group should detail the process of identifying the pattern, the process of creating the artwork, and the conclusions about the activity.
