Equivalence in mathematics is a relationship that takes place when two things are equal in some relevant aspects, but not necessarily in every aspect. We can describe an equivalence of values regarding quantity, common in mathematical problems involving units of measurement, such as time, length, mass, etc., or also regarding the equivalence of values when dealing with exchange rates between currencies from different countries.

Understanding the equivalence of values is essential to solve everyday problems, from figuring out the difference between buying a product in cash or in installments to traveling to another country. Having a good understanding of the value of money and learning how to make conversions is a valuable skill for life.

The concepts of value equivalence are of great practical importance. In the globalized world we live in, understanding the relative value of currencies and conversion rates can be the difference between making a good deal and losing money. Moreover, when traveling abroad, there is often a need to convert values, whether it is to understand how much a stay will cost or even to decide how much money to take.

The ability to convert values is also essential in our daily lives. Understanding that "two half liters are equivalent to one liter" or that "1,000 grams correspond to one kilogram" helps us make purchases at the supermarket, for example. Value equivalence is a fundamental mathematical concept that allows us to make useful comparisons and make informed decisions.

Practical Activity

Title of Activity: Value Equivalence - Conversion between Currencies and Units

Project Objective

In this activity, students will learn about the concept of value equivalence, with an emphasis on converting different currencies and units of measurement.

The idea is that, through a fun activity, students can practice these skills in a fun, collaborative, and effective way, deepening their knowledge of basic mathematics and also acquiring important skills such as time management, teamwork, and creative thinking.

Detailed description of the project

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members each. Each group will receive a list of fictitious prices for products in different currencies (dollar, euro, pound, etc.) and a list of items with their respective weights and measures in different units (grams, kilograms, liters, etc.).

The groups will convert the prices of the products to the local currency and the weights and measurements to the corresponding units in the metric system. The goal is to have a standardized catalog of prices and measurements.

The groups will also have to create a PowerPoint presentation with the results of the conversions, explaining the process through which they obtained the results.

Materials needed

  • Paper and pencil;
  • Calculator;
  • Conversion tables (currency and weight and volume measurements);
  • Computer with internet access;
  • Presentation software (Power Point, Google Slides, etc.).

Step by Step:

  1. Students, divided into groups, will receive a price and measurement list;
  2. Using the provided conversion tables, students will convert the prices to local currency and the measurements to the units of the metric system;
  3. Students must write down the entire conversion process, clearly explaining each step;
  4. With the results, students will create a PowerPoint presentation, showing the original price and measurement tables, the conversion process, and the converted values;
  5. Groups should present their work to the class, explaining the process and answering questions.

Deliverables

Groups should submit the following:

  1. A written report, which should include:

    • Introduction: where they explain the purpose of the project, the relevance of the subject, and the concepts used.
    • Development: where they discuss the theory of the concepts applied and explain the activity performed, detailing the methodology used and the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: where they reaffirm the concepts learned and reflect on the process and discoveries.
    • Bibliography: where they list all the sources consulted during the work.
  2. A PowerPoint presentation, which should show the original values, the conversion process, and the results obtained.

They should be prepared to explain and defend the process they followed to make the conversions and how they arrived at the answers.

With this, students will learn to identify different currencies and units of measurement, convert values, and work together to solve problems. They will also develop communication, time management, and creative thinking skills. In addition, they will have the opportunity to put their presentation skills into practice and defend their ideas.
