Introduction

Hello, science explorers! Are you ready for an exciting adventure that goes beyond our planet Earth? In this project, we will delve into the study of the 'Positions of the Sun and Shadow'. We will understand how and why the Sun appears to move across the sky during the day and how this affects the shadows we see.

Our Earth travels around the Sun, and this journey takes about 365 days, what we call a year. But besides that, our planet also spins around its own axis, like a spinning top! This rotation happens every day, and that's why we have day and night.

The position of the Sun in the sky throughout the day is affected by the rotation of the Earth. When the sun rises, it is on the east side. As the day goes by, it seems to move across the sky, reaching the highest point at noon, and then descends to the west, where it sets. This is what we call the solar trajectory.

Have you ever noticed that the shadow of a pole, a tree, or even yourselves changes throughout the day? This happens because of the position of the Sun in the sky. When the sun is rising or setting, the light comes from a low angle and the shadows become longer. When the sun is at its highest point, at noon, the light comes from above and the shadows are smaller. Understanding these changes is important to comprehend the movement of the Earth and how it affects our daily lives.

The Wonders of the Sun and Its Shadow: A Day of Observations

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to understand how the Earth's rotation movement around its own axis affects the position of the Sun in the sky and, consequently, the shape and size of an object's shadow throughout the day.

We will also work with art, creating beautiful drawings of our observations!

Detailed Project Description

For this activity, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will choose a sunny day and observe together the position of the Sun in the sky and the shape and size of the shadow of a fixed object (such as a pole, a tree, or a large toy). The observations will be made at three moments of the day: in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon.

Each group should make drawings of their observations and write about what they observed. In the end, the groups will present their drawings and findings to the class.

Necessary Materials

  • Large cardboard or flipchart
  • Colored pens, colored pencils, crayons
  • Ruler
  • Pencils and paper for notes
  • Objects to cast shadows (pole, tree, large toy)

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Choose a fixed object that produces a clear shadow.
  3. Record in writing and drawing on the cardboard or flipchart the first observation in the morning: the position of the Sun in the sky and the shape and size of the object's shadow. For example, you can write 'The sun is in the east and the shadow is very long'.
  4. Do the same at noon. How have the Sun and the object's shadow changed?
  5. Repeat the process in the afternoon. What has changed?
  6. After the last observation, each group should discuss and write their conclusions. For example, 'The position of the Sun changes during the day - it rises, reaches the highest point, and then descends. The object's shadow moves and changes in size as the sun changes position.'
  7. Now comes the most fun part: using colored pens, colored pencils, and crayons, you will turn the notes and drawings into a work of art! Be creative and make the drawing beautiful and colorful.
  8. Each group will present their findings and the drawing to the rest of the class. You should explain how the Sun moved throughout the day and how it affected the object's shadow.
