Hello, everyone! Did you know that the Portuguese language, like many others, has its own mechanisms to represent the sounds we make? These mechanisms are the phonemes and the graphemes, which are essential for our written communication.
Phonemes
Phonemes are the distinct sounds that form words. In other words, they are the sounds we emit when speaking. For example, in the word "sun", we have three phonemes: "s" /s/, "o" /ɔ/, and "l" /l/. Notice that, even though "s" and "l" are different letters, they represent the same sound in "sun".
Graphemes
On the other hand, graphemes are the written representations of these sounds, that is, they are the letters or groups of letters we use to write. In the previous example, "s", "o", and "l" are graphemes. However, not always does a grapheme represent only one phoneme. For example, in the word "cat", the letter "c" has the sound /k/ and the letter "a" has the sound /æ/.
The Importance of Understanding Phonemes and Graphemes
Now, you may be wondering: why is it important to understand phonemes and graphemes? Well, this understanding is crucial for us to learn how to read and write correctly. When we know which sounds the letters represent, we can decipher words and understand what is written. And, likewise, when we know which letters to use to represent the sounds we make, we can write clearly and precisely.
Furthermore, understanding phonemes and graphemes helps us develop a greater mastery of our language. This is because, by knowing the sounds that words have, we are able to identify pronunciation errors and, thus, correct them. And by knowing the letters that represent these sounds, we can write more efficiently and express our ideas more clearly.

Practical Activity: "Discovering the Sounds and Letters of our Language!"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to develop students' knowledge about phonemes and graphemes in a playful and interactive way. In addition, it aims to promote collaboration, time management, communication, and problem-solving.
Project Description
Each group of students will create a storybook, where words will be represented by drawings. The challenge is that, in each word, students must identify which phonemes and graphemes are present. Afterwards, they must create a drawing representing each word and the sounds it has.
Necessary Materials
- A4 paper sheets or notebook;
- Colored pencils, markers, crayons;
- Dictionary (optional, can be used as a support tool for identifying words and their phonemes and graphemes).
Step by Step

Group Formation: The teacher will form groups of 3 to 5 students.

Word Selection: Each group must choose 10 words. The words can be freely chosen by the students, but it is important to present a variety of phonemes and graphemes.

Analysis of Words: With the teacher's assistance, students must identify which phonemes and graphemes are present in each chosen word.

Creation of Drawings: Based on the words, students must create a drawing for each of them. The drawing should represent the word and the sounds it has.

Book Assembly: After all drawings are ready, students must assemble the storybook. Each drawing must be accompanied by the corresponding word and the identification of the phonemes and graphemes present.

Book Presentation: Finally, each group will present their book to the class, explaining the creation process, the chosen words, and the identified phonemes and graphemes.
Project Delivery
The final product will be the storybook, which must be delivered to the teacher. Additionally, each student must write a short text (with the help of the teacher, if necessary) describing the experience of creating the book, what they learned about phonemes and graphemes, and how this can help in reading and writing.
