Personal Pronouns

Context

Subject pronouns are essential parts of English grammar, and the correct understanding and application of these words can determine fluency and the ability to communicate effectively in English.

Personal pronouns are used to replace people's names (I, you, he, she, we, you, they), and correctly identifying when to use them is fundamental when speaking and writing the language. Subject pronouns play a crucial role in sentence structure and contribute to the fluency and understanding of the message being conveyed.

Understanding subject pronouns is also key to understanding number agreement (singular or plural) and gender agreement (masculine or feminine) in the English language. This can help students better understand the context of sentences and express themselves more accurately.

In terms of real-world applications, a solid understanding of subject pronouns is crucial in almost all forms of English communication. Whether in writing, reading, speaking, or listening comprehension, subject pronouns are essential for effective communication. Furthermore, they are also vital for understanding and translating texts and speeches correctly.

Subject pronouns not only enhance language fluency but also allow students to express their ideas more clearly and concisely. By understanding subject pronouns, students can avoid misunderstandings, precisely express their ideas and thoughts, and improve their English communication skills.

Students can use online resources to learn more about subject pronouns. Some of these resources include the basic grammar section of the British Council (link: https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/grammar/beginner-to-pre-intermediate) and Duolingo (link: https://www.duolingo.com/course/en/pt/Learn-English). Both sites offer detailed explanations and interactive exercises that can help reinforce the concepts learned.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Heroes of Subject Pronouns"

Project Objective

The main objective of the project is to understand and correctly apply the subject pronouns of the English language by creating a comic strip involving fictional heroes.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for creating a comic strip, which must include at least 8 panels.

Each group member must create and introduce at least one character (hero or villain) to the story. The characters should be referred to by subject pronouns, thus practicing the correct use of these pronouns. The story should be primarily told through dialogues, encouraging the diverse use of pronouns.

Students should use their creativity to determine the powers, characteristics, and personality of their characters, as well as the plot of the story. The project must be done in English and should incorporate a wide variety of subject pronouns.

Required Materials

  • A3 size paper sheets
  • Colored pencils, markers, pens
  • Ruler
  • English-Portuguese dictionary
  • References on subject pronouns (books, websites, videos)

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Execution

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each student should create their character, considering their powers, characteristics, and personality.
  3. Together, students should define the story's plot and how each character will participate.
  4. Next, they should sketch the comic strip, dividing it into at least 8 panels.
  5. After deciding on the sketch, they should fill each panel with illustrations and dialogues that incorporate the use of subject pronouns.
  6. Students should check the grammar correctness and the frequency of subject pronoun usage.
  7. Upon completing the project, each group should explain their story and the use of pronouns to the class, presenting the comic strip.
  8. Finally, each group should write a report on the project, explaining the creation process, difficulties faced and overcome, the relevance of subject pronouns in language, and the lessons learned.

Project Deliverables

The deliverables will consist of the finalized comic strip and a written report. The comic strip should reflect the group's collaboration and creativity, as well as the correct understanding and application of subject pronouns.

The report should include the following topics:

  1. Introduction: where the group describes the project's purpose and relevance.
  2. Development: explanation of how the activity was carried out, focusing on the theory of subject pronouns, methodology used, discussion on teamwork, and problem-solving.
  3. Conclusions: reflection on the learnings, difficulties, and successes of the project.
  4. Bibliography: citing all sources used to learn and apply subject pronouns.

The report should be submitted within a week after the completion of the practical activity to allow students time to reflect and write comprehensively and deeply about the learnings and experiences during the activity.
