In the past, most people lived in the countryside, depending on agriculture and animal husbandry to survive. Cities were small and rare, and urban life was very different from what we know today. However, significant changes occurred over the centuries. The Industrial Revolution, for example, transformed the way people worked, lived, and related to each other. It brought about large-scale urbanization and industrialization, which drastically changed life in the city and in the countryside.

Introduction

The Industrial Revolution, which began in England in the late 18th century, was one of the most important events in human history. It marked the transition from an agrarian and manual economy to an industrial and mechanized economy. Large factories were built, and people left their lands in the countryside to work in the cities. This started a process of urbanization that continues to this day.

With urbanization, life in cities changed significantly. New professions emerged, people began to live in buildings and apartments instead of houses in the countryside, and social life became more complex. On the other hand, life in the countryside also changed. Agriculture became more mechanized, and rural communities began to rely more and more on cities for goods and services.

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students, in groups, to research, analyze, and compare the different realities of life in the countryside and in the city in the past and present, identifying the main changes that have occurred throughout history to the present day. Additionally, it is expected that students develop research, communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving skills.

Detailed Project Description

Each group will be tasked with researching and preparing a "Travel Diary" from the past and present, depicting life in the countryside and in the city. In the past "Travel Diary," students should imagine themselves as time travelers, living in a rural community and a city in the past. In the present "Travel Diary," they should portray life in the present day, considering the changes that have occurred over time.

Students should investigate, for example, how people worked, lived, had fun, and related to each other in the countryside and in the city in different eras. They should also analyze the social, economic, and environmental implications of these changes. The idea is that through this activity, students can better understand the transformation of society and appreciate the diversity of experiences and ways of life.

Required Materials

• Internet access
• Colored cardboard paper
• Colored pens, colored pencils, crayons
• Glue, scissors
• Old magazines (if possible)

• A notebook or folder to organize research and productions

Step by Step

1. Group Formation: Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be responsible for researching life in the countryside and in the city in the past and present.

2. Research: Students, together, should research life in the countryside and in the city in different eras. They can use history books and the internet to conduct their research. It is important that they take note of the information they consider relevant.

3. Preparation of the "Travel Diary": With the collected information, students should prepare, on cardboard paper, two "Travel Diaries" (one for the past and one for the present). They should use their creativity to draw and write about life in the countryside and in the city.

4. Presentation of the "Travel Diaries": Each group must present their "Travel Diaries" to the class. They should explain the differences and similarities between life in the countryside and in the city in the past and present, and how these changes have affected society.

5. Class Discussion: After all presentations, the class should discuss the findings and reflections made. The teacher should guide the discussion, highlighting the main changes and their implications.

Delivery Format

Students must submit the "Travel Diaries" and the notebook/folder with their research and notes. Additionally, it is desirable that groups also present some of the findings and reflections made during the research and preparation of the "Travel Diaries" to the class.
