Hello, kids! Today we are going on an exciting mathematical adventure about sequences of addition and subtraction. But what are sequences? Have you heard about them? Let me explain! Sequences are sets of numbers that follow a specific pattern. They can be progressive, when they increase, or regressive, when they decrease. They can also follow a rule, such as adding or subtracting a specific number each time.

Addition sequences are those in which, for each term, we add the same number, called the ratio, to the previous term. For example, the sequence 2, 5, 8, 11, 14 is an addition sequence, where the ratio is 3, because we always add 3 to the previous term to find the next one.

Subtraction sequences, on the other hand, are the opposite. Instead of adding, we subtract the same number, also called the ratio, from a term to find the next one. For example, the sequence 20, 15, 10, 5, 0 is a subtraction sequence, where the ratio is 5, because we always subtract 5 from the previous term to find the next one.

Importance

Sequences are very important in mathematics and everyday life. They help us understand how numbers relate to each other and recognize patterns. Isn't that amazing? We use sequences all the time, even without realizing it. For example, when you count to 10, you are using an addition sequence: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1. And when you count from 10 to 0, you are using a subtraction sequence: 10 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1.

Understanding addition and subtraction sequences helps us solve everyday problems, such as calculating the amount of money we have, telling time, planning a trip, and even playing games. Practical Activity: "Sequence Hunters"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to explore and understand addition and subtraction sequences, identifying the pattern and ratio of each one, as well as developing teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills.

Project Description

You will be "Sequence Hunters"! In groups of 3 to 5 students, you will explore different daily situations where you can identify addition and subtraction sequences. You will record these sequences, identify the ratio of each one, and create drawings or stories to represent them.

Materials Needed

  • Paper and pencil for notes
  • Drawing materials (colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc.)
  • Writing materials (colorful pens, markers, etc.)
  • Large sheets of cardboard or kraft paper to create the "Sequence Map"

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Remember, teamwork is very important!

  2. Exploration of Situations: Together, discuss and find daily situations where you can notice addition or subtraction sequences. For example, counting minutes during a class, the number of birds in a tree throughout the day, the days of the week numbers, etc. Write down all the situations you find.

  3. Identification of Sequences: For each situation, identify if the sequence is of addition or subtraction and find out the ratio. The ratio is the number that you always add or subtract to go from one term to the next. Write down all the sequences and their ratios.

  4. Creation of the "Sequence Map": Now, take the cardboard sheet or kraft paper and create the "Sequence Map". On it, draw or write the situations you found, the sequences you identified, and their ratios. You can use different colors for each sequence and draw images to help represent the situations.

  5. Presentation: When you finish, each group will present their "Sequence Map" to the class. Explain the situations you found, the sequences you identified, and the ratios of each one. Remember to work as a team, listen to everyone's ideas, and respect your classmates' opinions.
