Multiplication by 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10

Context

Hello, little mathematicians! How about we embark together on a super exciting mathematical adventure? Our destination is the wonderful world of multiplication! 🚀 But before we set off, let's understand why multiplication is so important.

Multiplication is a fundamental mathematical skill that we use every day, even without realizing it. When you divide cookies equally with your friends, you are multiplying! Or when you group your toy cars into boxes, you are multiplying again! Through multiplication, we can better understand the concept of quick addition. For example, 3 + 3 + 3 is the same as 3 x 3.

Multiplication also helps us understand the idea of scalability, that is, when we have a group of things and need to increase that group. For example, if you have 4 candies and want to give 2 to each of your 3 friends, you need to do a multiplication: 4 x 3.

Introduction

Now that we understand the importance of multiplication, let's learn some multiplication tables! Knowing the multiplication tables is like having a super powerful mental calculator! Let's focus on the tables of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10.

The 2 times table is super easy! Just remember that any number multiplied by 2 is double that number. For example, 2 x 3 = 6, because 3 is double 3.

The 3 times table is a little more challenging, but nothing we can't learn together! Did you know that any number multiplied by 3 is the same as adding that number to itself twice? For example, 3 x 4 = 12, because 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.

And what about the 4 times table? You can think of it as the 2 times table, but multiplied by 2! For example, 4 x 3 = 12, because 3 x 2 = 6 and 6 x 2 = 12.

The 5 times table is pretty cool! It is half of the 10 times table. For example, 5 x 3 = 15, because 10 x 3 = 30 and 30 ÷ 2 = 15.

Last but not least, we have the 10 times table. It's super easy! Any number multiplied by 10 is the same as writing the number followed by a zero. For example, 10 x 8 = 80, because we write the number 8 and add a zero.

Now that we know a little more about multiplication, we can start our adventure! Get ready, because the learning will be amazing! 💪

Practical Activity: "The Journey of Multiplication"

Project Objective

Enhance knowledge and fluency in the 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 times tables, while developing problem-solving skills, logical reasoning, group collaboration, communication, and creativity.

Project Description

You will become true mathematical travelers! Each group of 3 to 5 students will plan an imaginary trip to a place of their choice. During the trip, you will encounter mathematical challenges involving the 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 times tables.

Required Materials

  • Pencil and paper
  • Mathematics textbooks
  • Internet access (optional, for research)

Step by Step

1. Dividing Tasks

Each group member will have a role to play. You can choose between:

  • Travel Planner: Responsible for creating the travel itinerary, deciding on the location, and the activities to be done.

  • Storyteller: Responsible for writing a story about the trip. The story should include the places visited, the activities carried out, and the mathematical challenges encountered.

  • Mathemagician: Responsible for creating the mathematical challenges.

  • Artist: Responsible for drawing images to illustrate the story.

2. Planning the Trip

The Travel Planner should start by creating the travel itinerary. Remember to include the mathematical challenges at each location visited. For example, if you are going to the beach, you can solve a multiplication problem using seashells!

3. Writing the Story

The Storyteller will use the itinerary to write the story of the trip. Remember to include all the places visited, the activities carried out, and the mathematical challenges encountered.

4. Creating the Mathematical Challenges

The Mathemagician will create the mathematical challenges for each location of the trip. The challenges should involve the 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 times tables. For example, if you are visiting a zoo, you can create a challenge involving the multiplication of numbers of animals!

5. Illustrating the Story

The Artist will draw images to illustrate the story. Use colors and lots of creativity!

6. Presenting the Project

Finally, each group will present their project to the class. Remember to divide the tasks during the presentation!

At the end of the week, all projects will be displayed in the classroom, and each group will have the chance to tell their travel story and share the mathematical challenges they created and solved. Let's go, little mathematicians, the journey of multiplication awaits us!
