Introduction

Hello, my young mathematicians! Are we ready to embark on an incredible journey into the world of sequences? In this project, we will delve into one of the most fundamental concepts in mathematics: arithmetic sequences. You must have encountered sequences in many places, even without realizing it. For example, the numbers on a clock form a sequence, as well as the days of the week.

An arithmetic sequence is a list of numbers where the difference between two consecutive terms is always the same. For example, the sequence 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 is an arithmetic sequence with a difference of 2 between the terms. This means that to find the next number in the sequence, you simply add 2 to the last number.

Furthermore, sequences can also be increasing, when the numbers increase with each term, or decreasing, when the numbers decrease with each term.

Context

Arithmetic sequences are present in many situations in our daily lives. For example, when you are counting the days until a special date, you are visualizing an arithmetic sequence. Similarly, when you are saving money, you are creating an arithmetic sequence.

In our daily lives, we also encounter sequences involving subtraction, called decreasing arithmetic sequences. An example is when you count from 10 to 1 to start a game. In this case, the difference between the terms is -1, and this is the rule to find the next number in the sequence.

What makes this concept even more interesting is that with arithmetic sequences, we can do much more than just write a list of numbers. We can use them to solve real-world problems, understand patterns, and predict future events.

Practical Activity: "The Sequences Trail"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for you, in groups, to deepen your knowledge of Arithmetic Sequences and Decreasing Arithmetic Sequences, practicing addition and subtraction skills at the same time. In addition, the activity aims to stimulate communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving.

Project Description

You will create a "Sequences Trail"! Each group will be responsible for planning and drawing a board representing an arithmetic sequence and a decreasing arithmetic sequence. The goal is that as players move along the board, they practice addition and subtraction, respectively, to advance. At each step, players must justify the addition or subtraction performed.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or poster board (for the board)
  • Colored pens, colored pencils, or crayons
  • Ruler
  • Dice or a dice-rolling app on a cell phone
  • Markers or pieces for each player (can be bottle caps, buttons, etc.)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Board Planning: Together, decide on a theme for the board (it can be a scenario, a drawing, etc.) and draw it on the cardboard or poster board.

  3. Creating the Sequences: On the board, draw a line representing the game trail. Then, choose a number to start each sequence. From this number, add or subtract the same amount for each new space on the trail (you can use the ruler to help).

  4. Game Rules Development: Now, work together to create the game rules. How will players advance or retreat on the trail? What should they do when they land on a special space?

  5. Game Preparation: Once the rules are defined, set up the board and markers to start playing.

  6. Playing the "Sequences Trail": Now is the time to have fun and learn! Each player, on their turn, will roll the dice and advance on the trail, justifying the addition or subtraction performed.
