At the beginning of our journey, we will learn about the three basic accentuation rules: tonic accentuation, graphic accentuation, and prosodic accentuation. Tonic accentuation is what we call the emphasis we give to a syllable in the pronunciation of words. Graphic accentuation is when we use the acute accent (´), the circumflex (^), or the tilde (~) to indicate the tonic syllable. Prosodic accentuation is the name we give to the way we speak words, with the tonic syllable having greater intensity.

One of the most interesting things about accentuation is that it is like a puzzle, where each rule and exception fit perfectly. That's precisely why we have to pay close attention when accentuating words, as a small mistake can change the whole meaning of a text. For example, the word 'pelo' (without accent) can be used to refer to a type of animal skin, while 'pêlo' (with accent) refers to hair or body hair.

Project Objective

Detailed Project Description

In this activity, you will create a fun and interactive board game called 'Accentuating the Right Word.' The board will contain words that you must accentuate correctly, and you will have to answer questions to advance in the game. Your team should work together, discussing the answers and making decisions collectively.

Required Materials

• Cardboard or cardstock
• Colorful pens and colored pencils
• Die
• Colored markers
• Cutouts from magazines, newspapers, or prints with words

Step by Step

1. Group Formation: Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be responsible for creating a board game.

2. Board Elaboration: Draw a game board on cardboard or cardstock. The board should contain 20 to 30 squares, numbered in ascending order. Leave enough space on each square to write a word.

3. Word Selection: With the help of magazines, newspapers, or prints, each group should choose words to be accentuated. The words should be from different grammatical categories (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.). Each group should select 20 to 30 words.

4. Accentuation of Words: Now, you must correctly accentuate the selected words. Remember to apply the rules we learned: tonic accentuation, graphic accentuation, and prosodic accentuation.

5. Question Elaboration: For each word, you must create a question that helps identify the tonic syllable. For example, if the word is 'câmera,' the question could be 'In which syllable is the word 'câmera' stronger?'

6. Game Rules Elaboration: You must create a set of rules for the game. The rules should include how to advance on the board, how to answer the questions, and how to score points.

7. Game Assembly: Glue the accented words on the squares of the board. Write the questions on a piece of paper and the points for each player.

8. Game Presentation: Each group must present their game to the class. Explain the rules, show the board, and the accented words.

9. Playing the Game: The class will divide into groups and play all the games created. Each group should record how many words they accented correctly and how many they did not.
