Reading is a fundamental skill for life, both in school and beyond. When we read, we not only acquire knowledge, but also exercise our creativity, expand our vocabulary, and develop the ability to think critically. Therefore, it is essential that we know how to read fluently and comprehensively.

Reading fluency is the ability to read quickly, accurately, and with appropriate intonation. When we are fluent, we can understand the text effortlessly, as if we were having a conversation with the author. On the other hand, reading comprehension goes beyond fluency. It is the ability to understand what we read, to identify the main ideas, details, and the relationships between them.

To develop reading fluency and comprehension, we need to practice. And the best way to do this is by reading. The more we read, the more familiar we become with different types of texts, with words, and with language structures. In addition, reading exposes us to new ideas, cultures, and perspectives, enriching our repertoire and our worldview.

The Importance of Reading

Reading is an essential part of our daily lives. From the moment we wake up until we go to sleep, we are constantly reading. Whether it's the grocery shopping list, a message from a friend on our phone, signs on the street, school books, news on the internet, all of this involves reading.

Understanding what we read and being able to express our ideas clearly and coherently is fundamental for success in school and in life. In school, reading is the foundation of all subjects. It is through reading that we learn mathematics, science, history, geography, among others. Outside of school, reading allows us to access information, communicate, solve problems, and make decisions.

Furthermore, reading is an endless source of pleasure. Through books, we can travel to distant places, meet different people, experience exciting adventures, and discover new ideas. Therefore, it is important to encourage reading from an early age, so that children can develop the habit of reading and enjoy everything that reading has to offer.

Practical Activity: 'Adventure in the Land of Books'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to develop reading fluency and comprehension skills, as well as teamwork abilities. Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants, will read a children's book selected by the teacher, discuss the story among themselves, and then present a dramatization of the book to the class, created by themselves.

Project Description

Each group will be responsible for reading, discussing, and dramatizing a children's book. The reading and discussion should be done together, with all group members actively participating. After the discussion, students should plan and rehearse the dramatization of the book. The presentation will be held for the class at the end of the project.

Required Materials

• Children's books (one for each group, chosen by the teacher)
• Paper and pencil for notes
• Materials for the dramatization: costumes for the characters, objects for the settings (can be made with recyclable materials)

Detailed Step-by-Step

Step 1: Group Formation and Book Selection The teacher will form the groups and distribute a children's book to each group. The book should be read at home by the students, with the help of parents if necessary.

Step 2: Reading and Discussion of the Book Within the group, students should read the book together. After reading, they should discuss the story, the characters, the places where the story takes place, the main events, etc. They can take notes if they wish.

Step 3: Planning the Dramatization Based on the discussion about the book, students should plan how they will present the story to the class. They should decide who will play each character, how the settings will be, which parts of the story they will represent, etc.

Step 4: Rehearsal of the Dramatization After planning, students should rehearse the dramatization. They can make changes to the script if necessary, but always together and with the teacher's approval.

Step 5: Presentation of the Dramatization At the end of the project, each group must present their dramatization to the class. During the presentation, students should demonstrate reading fluency and comprehension, as well as teamwork.

The project delivery will be the presentation of the dramatization to the class. In addition, each group must submit a short written report, telling about their experience of reading and discussing the book as a group, how the planning and rehearsal process was, and what they learned from the project.
