Dear students, we will embark on a journey of discovery and learning about word accentuation, one of the most important aspects of our Portuguese language. Did you know that the accents we use in certain words serve a very special purpose? They help us understand how to correctly pronounce words and differentiate the meanings of words that may seem similar but have different senses. Amazing, isn't it?

Accentuation is the way we put accents on some words, and this is very important for our communication. Have you ever thought about what it would be like if there were no accents, and all words had the same pronunciation? It would be very difficult to understand what people are saying, right? That's why learning about accentuation is essential so that we can express ourselves well and understand what others are saying or writing.

Introduction

The accentuation of words in Portuguese is based on some grammatical rules that help us know in which syllable we should place the accent. In our language, words can be classified according to the position of the tonic syllable, which is the syllable that is pronounced with more strength. And it is precisely the position of the tonic syllable that determines whether the word should be accented or not.

There are three types of words regarding the position of the tonic syllable: the oxytones, which have the tonic syllable on the last syllable, like 'café'; the paroxytones, which have the tonic syllable on the penultimate syllable, like 'casa'; and the proparoxytones, which have the tonic syllable on the antepenultimate syllable, like 'médico'. Each of these types of words follows a different accentuation rule.

Practical Activity: 'Guess the Syllable'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to understand, in a playful and practical way, the accentuation rules of oxytone, paroxytone, and proparoxytone words. In addition, the project aims to encourage communication, teamwork, creativity, and proactivity.

Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will create a riddle game with accented and unaccented words, where the answers to the riddles must show the type of accentuation of the word. Each group will be responsible for creating at least 10 riddles and presenting them to the class.

Required Materials

• Paper and pencil to write down the riddles
• Access to a dictionary (physical or online)
• Cardboard or card paper for making the game

Step by Step

1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will choose a name for their team.

2. Studying Accentuation Rules: Each group should study the accentuation rules of oxytone, paroxytone, and proparoxytone words. They can use the textbook, the internet, or dictionaries to assist.

3. Creating Riddles: With the acquired knowledge, each group should create riddles. For example: 'I am a word that ends in 'a', have the tonic syllable on the penultimate syllable, and I am a paroxytone. What word am I?' (Answer: 'casa'). The answers to the riddles should indicate the type of word accentuation.

4. Making the Game: Each group will write the riddles on pieces of paper. On the front of each paper, they will write the riddle and, on the back, the answer. Then, they will glue these papers on the cardboard or card paper, forming a game board.

5. Game Presentation: Each group will present the game to the class, explaining the rules and the answers to the riddles. They can also create a scenario or a story for the game, making it more fun.

6. Group Game: At the end of the presentations, the groups will play each other's games, in a kind of 'knowledge exchange fair'. Each team will have the chance to play the games of other groups and learn more about accentuation.

By the end of the project, each student will have a better understanding of word accentuation and will have developed skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, and time management. Remember, learning is better when it's fun! Have fun and enjoy the game!
