Before we set off, it's helpful to know what 'movement' means. To move literally means to change position. The earliest forms of human movement were walking and running. As societies grew, humans found ways to travel faster and carry more. Today, we have so many different means of transport like cars, trains, planes, and even spaceships!

The movement of goods, on the other hand, refers to transporting items from one place to another. Early trade involved exchanging goods between people living nearby. Over time, societies established trade routes that spanned great distances, enabling people to exchange goods with others who lived far away.

Introduction

The movement of people and goods is super important in history because it's linked to how societies formed and developed. Trade routes and migration paths played a central role in spreading cultures and exchanging ideas and technology.

Have you heard of the Silk Road? Or the Camino de Santiago? These are just two of the countless trade routes and migration paths that have shaped the course of history. The Silk Road, for example, connected China to the Mediterranean, allowing goods, ideas, and even diseases to spread far and wide. The Camino de Santiago in Spain was a major pilgrimage route during the Middle Ages, attracting people from across Europe.

Throughout this project, we'll uncover more about these and other major trade routes and migration paths, and how they've shaped the world we live in today. Let's embark on a learning journey filled with discoveries!

Hands-on Activity

Project Title: 'Our Journey of Connections'

Project Goal:

• Understand the importance of human and goods movement in shaping societies.
• Research and present a significant trade route or migration path in history.
• Develop teamwork, research skills, communication skills, and creativity.

Project Outline:

In this activity, student teams will choose a famous trade route or migration path from history to research and present. They will create an illustrated map with important locations along the route or path, and prepare an oral presentation to share their findings with the class.

Materials Required:

• Drawing paper or poster board
• Colourful markers, crayons, or pastels
• Books, encyclopedias, or internet access for research
• Paper and pencils for note-taking
• Scissors and glue

Project Procedure:

Step 1: Form Teams and Choose a Route/Path

Students will form teams of 3-5 members. Each team will select a historical trade route or migration path for their research. The teacher may provide a list of options or students can choose freely.

Step 2: Research

Teams will research their chosen trade route or migration path. They should find out when and why the route or path was established, the key locations along the route, what goods or people were transported, and how the route or path impacted the societies it touched.

Step 3: Create the Illustrated Map

Based on the information gathered, teams will create an illustrated map of the route or path. They should include key locations, distances between them, and any other relevant details. Maps should be colorful and visually engaging.

Step 4: Prepare a Presentation

Teams will then prepare an oral presentation to share their findings with the class. They should explain why they chose their route or path, what they learned about it, and its historical significance.

Step 5: Project Presentations

Each team will present their project to the class. After all presentations, the class will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the routes and paths that were explored.

Deliverables:

Student teams will submit the illustrated map of their chosen trade route or migration path, and present their project orally to the class. Additionally, each team should submit a list of references used for their research.
